This EXTERNAL EVENT on the occasion of their first anniversary, our friends, London Black Atheists (http://www.meetup.com/London-Black-Atheists/) are hosting a panel debate - Love From The Other Side: Sexuality, Gender, Feminism & Religion. Hayley Reid of UK Black Feminists will start the event by performing a monologue about the reaction of a church to a member coming out as a lesbian. This will be followed by the debate chaired and facilitated by Ngoma Bishop, a community activist and artist - http://www.bemanetwork.org.uk/2012/08/ngoma-bishop-ceo.html
The debate will explore the issues faced in religious communities by LGBT and feminists. How are they addressing these issues? Do they wish to continue to be part of religious communities and why? What do they feel about scriptures that condemn who they are? Panelists will be asked to consider whether secular ethics are leading or causing positive changes in society rather than religion, and therefore should be the only the way forward.
The panel will include:
Davis Marc Iyalla - a Christian Nigerian LGBT activist - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davis_Mac-Iyalla
Bisi Alimi - a Muslim Nigerian HIV treatment/prevention and LGBT rights advocate - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisi_Alimi
saHHara - a Nigerian trans woman - http://www.sahhara.co.uk/
Siana Bangura - feminist, atheist, blogger and creative - http://dontgotheresiana.com/
Jodie de Haarte - LBA organiser, atheist, feminist and LGBT activist
This event will be challenging and thought-provoking.
