Sunday lunch-time walk - Battersea Park

Meet up at 12.30pm outside Sloane Square tube station (Circle and District lines). Battersea Park got the vote by 14 votes to 6. We'll be walking down to Chelsea Bridge (barracking Prince Charles as we go?), which gives excellent views over the Thames and surrounding area. This riverside Victorian Park's main claim to fame is that it was the site for the Funfair and Gardens for the 1951 Festival of Britain, a post WWII extravaganza to get people looking forward again. Some of this still remains. It's also important in the annals of football history (no, don't run away ladies) and the vivisection controversy and, well, I can't mention all the interesting features can I? The 200 acre Park includes various gardens and is very well maintained but is less formal than Regents Park. It has a large lake, so bring binoculars for some casual birdwatching. There’s an Italian restaurant (La Gondola) by the lake by which we could have a bite for lunch. We'll return over the (heavily scaffolded) Albert Bridge and along Royal Hospital Road. PS More inspiring names for this walk will be gladly accepted.

Marvellous; I met some like minded people and enjoyed their company very much. I also liked strolling round the park as I once lived in Battersea and in Chelsea.
