Private Screening of Religulous

Details

PLEASE NOTE; the screening has been put back 30 minutes to 5.30 p.m. to allow anyone who also wishes to attend the BHA AGM to have time to also attend the screening.

Religulous is a 2008 American comic documentary written by and starring comedian Bill Maher and directed by Larry Charles, a writer for the early Seinfeld series, who has also directed the films Borat, Bruno and The Dictator all with Sacha Baron Coen.

The title of the film is derived from the words “religion” and ‘”ridiculous” The documentary examines organized religion and religious belief.

A range of religious views are explored as Bill Maher travels to numerous religious destinations, including Jerusalem, the Vatican City and Salt Lake City, interviewing believers. The interviewees include a former member of Jews for Jesus, Christians, Muslims, Mormons and Hasidic Jews. He also travels to Speakers’ Corner in Hyde where he "preaches" Scientology beliefs.

The Canadian Press said the movie "delivers a laugh-out-loud attack on the most sacred of cows."

Claudia Puig of USA Today wrote: "those with a taste for irreverent humor and clear-eyed analysis will find it funny, enlightening and disturbing."

Ben Kenigsberg of Time Out New York wrote: "The worst scenes in Religulous are appalling for their methods; the best are appalling for their information."

The film will screen at 5.30pm but we suggest you get there anytime after 4.30pm to have a drink, chat and secure a seat. We will also have tables reserved in the Roxy after the screening for you to chat and eat if you wish.

Please register your intention to come on Meetup, if we reach capacity those who have registered to attend will have priority over those who have not.

We suggest a donation of £4 on the day to cover the cost of the screen hire.

We look forward to seeing you there and if you have any suggestions for further films you think we should screen as a group please send your suggestions to;
