Bike Ride on the Mass Central Rail Trail

This 12.4-mile ride (both ways). It's a very scenic ride but given the time of day and just to be safe, bring bug ointment. We will also be doing this bike ride weekly. It's a great starter for the season and a decent "after work" ride. See you there!

DIRECTIONS:

From 1-90 coming from Worcester: Take exit 5 off of I-190 and head south on Route 140. At the bridge where Route 140 south continues, turn right onto Thomas Street. The reservoir will be on your left and the Thomas Street parking lot will be on your right.

From Worcester via Route 12:
Take West Boylston Street, from I-90, exit 1, all the way to Central Street, West Boylston. Take a left at Central. Central becomes Crescent St. At a fork in the road, stay Right. That's Thomas Street. Go about a mile. along the Reservior, to just before Route 140, and turn right into Thomas Street parking lot.

Some folks were asking during the ride: The river that the trail followed was the Quinepoxet River.

Don't wait for me if I'm late

We will always wait for you Sheila. You were, however, on time. :)

      Thanks Jerry...always the gentleman.

Nice trail, beautiful weather, great company - minus the flies! Thanks for organizing, Sue!

Hope to make it next week. I was getting my car worked on and it wasn't ready until too late for me to make it.

Before I forget, if you are using a GPS today, set the address to 191 Thomas Street, West Boylston MA.

    Hi all,
I fell yesterday - jammed my big toe and twisted my knee. I hope to still be able to ride tonight. But, don't wait for me just i case.

Try not to push it today. There will be other opportunities.

Don't forget to bring a water bottle with you today. There will be a lot os shaded areas on the rail trail and the breeze today has been a help.

    May 31, 2013

  • Sheila B

Oh Mary, so sorry...hope to see you, tho, take care!

    May 31, 2013

Either will be fine. The rail trail is hard packed gravel.

  • Bruce W

Street or mountain bike? I've got both. The gravel is mostly gone (the last time I looked), so you can use either, although mountain or hybrid might be better.

Hi Sue, what pace are you going to maintain on these rides...?

On nicer days there are too many walkers, baby buggies, and kids on that rail trail to really get a fast speed going.

Good manners are the rule. Stay right and only pass on the left when it is safe. I may be joining you on Friday. I can always catch up on drinking later. ;)

I don't measure the mph on the rides, so I can't answer your question. We're on the casual rider side, so the pace is not fast, but it's also not very slow, either.

Is the parking lot easily identified with a sign?
    Free parking?

I will stand by the road. Watch for the guy your mother warned you about.

191 Thomas Street. There is a sign set back from the road and I believe it is the only parking lot in the vicinity. Happy trails.

I'll add the GPS address for the ride. Thanks for the info, Jerry.

Unfortunately I cannot make this one as a good friend is moving to England and her going away party in this evening. Ironically she always encourages me to ride. Have a really great ride. see you at the next one.
