Build and throw Atlatle

Meet the weapon that predates the bow, the Atlatle. The wooly mammoth may owe its extinction to this tool, and it's still used in many parts of the world today. It's easier to make than a bow. I've thrown mine 75 yards. This is your opportunity to build an affective survival weapon and try what our ancestors used for thoughsands of years. Please RSVP so Iknow how much material to collect. All events family friendly. No drugs or alcohol please. Donations accepted to help cover cost of meetup site. The only thing you will need is a good fixed blade knife for scraping and carving.

I had a lot of fun learning new things. Brought my atlatle home and threw my dart till my arm was sore. Can't wait till the next one.

Freemont Meadow in Shevlin Park is an historic site, and a fitting place for our first meetup. This was no dought one of the important summer hunting areas for indigenous peoples and was one of the stops for General Freemont in the 1840s. No fires are alowed there. I will bring stone knapping tools and what we need to put some atlatls together. This will be a good opportunity to talk about upcomming meetups.

I'll take a good look at the park and decide where we can meet and hold the class. I hope having more details will encourage others to come. I will bring materials for making atlatls and bone tipped darts, and have some examples of stone tipped. If it's safe we'll do a quick handspindle fire to heat pine pitch for glue. The only thing you'll need would be a fixed blade knife for scraping and carving. Still open to suggestions for a better place if anyone knows one.

I'm considering Shevlin Park as location for first meetup. I live in Sisters, so I know lots of places here, but I would like to find a place that may be more centrally located for those of you in Bend. An ideal place would offer a shady place to build your atlatl and an open grassy area to throw them without having to worry about the public. If you have some suggestions please share them.
