February at FUMA!

This month's meet is being hosted and put on by the orienteering team at Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA).  They hosted a top-notch meet last year and there's fantastic terrain on their campus, so this is one that you won't want to miss.

Starts: 10:00am - 1:00pm.  Everyone must return by 3:00pm.  (All competitors must check in at the finish. If you don't, we'll assume you are lost and send out search parties!)

Location:  Fork Union Military Academy, 4744 James Madison Highway, Fork Union VA.  (see map link above to get directions.)

Parking:  From US-15, turn on Petit Foster Rd.  Proceed about 0.2 miles.  Turn left and proceed down the hill.  Parking will be available in lots in front of and behind the Estes Athletic Center.  (See map below.)

Start / Finish: Adjacent to the Estes Athletic Center on the FUMA campus.

Cost: $6 for adults (age 21+), $4 for juniors (age under 21).  If family or group goes out together, $6 for first map, $2 for each additional map for group.

Other:

As always, instruction will be available for beginners.

Bring your own compass, or borrow one of ours (on a first-come basis).  Be prepared to leave car keys or an ID as a deposit when borrowing.

Dress appropriately for the weather and for travel both on & off trail.

* The FUMA team is also doing a fundraiser and will have snacks and hot chili available for purchase, so bring a little extra cash so you can get something to eat after your run.

Points of contact: Carl Muench (muenchc at fuma dot org); Ed Moore (mooree at fuma dot org)

If you plan to come out, be sure to sign up in advance so we can get as accurate a count as possible for maps.  There is a question on the RSVP that asks which course(s) you'll likely do.  Though you won't be committed to this choice, please answer to help with planning.

Current course information: (Subject to modification.  Check back in early February for any changes.)

* e-punching is not available and will be pin punches (as used at CVOC meets).

* Orienteering will be a mix of woods and campus orienteering that should be interesting for all courses.  Woods have opened up with winter, but there are still briars to be encountered.  Please wear long pants or gaiters if on an intermediate or advanced course.

The Courses:

Course                                        Length (km)

White/Yellow (beginner/novice)       2.0

Orange (intermediate)                          3.9

Advanced                                                  6.0

Does anyone know if the course is configured in the deep woods? Or is this more of an urban O-course?

Last year, they had the beginner course set primarily on the campus itself, while the other courses were mostly in the woods with some open fields. If doing the advanced course, you can count on it being primarily in the woods.

Thanks Ellen/Tim! We'll be driving from the Beach, so we want to make sure it is worth our while. :)
