Updated details: We'll have beginner, intermediate, and advanced foot courses, as well as the bike/foot diet adventure race - see details below.
Brady Saunders is a great area that we do not get to use often. It has attractive runnable forest with a lot of detail, and a complicated bike and foot trail network. We are planning on holding a 3-hour bike and foot diet adventure race, and 3 normal foot orienteering courses.
STARTS: The adventure race will have a mass start at 11:00 am. Foot orienteering may start any time between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm. (Everybody must be back to the start no later than 2:30 pm.) Feel free to arrive any time after 10:30 am.
LOCATION: Heart of Virginia Scout Reservation, Maidens Road (Route 634) Goochland. From the traffic lights at the junction of River Road & Maidens Road head NE for 1 mile and look for the reservation on the right – it has a large sign. On entering the reservation, follow red/white orienteering signs - turn immediately left and follow the dirt road in a right hand loop for about ¾ mile to the parking at the SW corner of the lake.
COST: Maps are $5 each.
- As always, instruction will be available for beginners or those who would like some help to get started.
- Bring your own compass, or borrow one of ours (on a first-come basis). Be prepared to leave car keys or an ID as a deposit when borrowing.
- Dress appropriately for the weather and for travel both on & off trail. The event may get cancelled in case of adverse weather.
- Bike helmets are required.
- Feel free to post comments or contact one of the organizers if you have any questions.
*** Our meets wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers. We will need volunteers with control pickup, so please consider offering some of your time at this or another upcoming meet. ***
+++++ When you RSVP, please answer the question & indicate: (1) whether you are doing AR or just foot, (2) if you need beginner instruction, (3) if you can help to collect controls at 2.30pm. This really helps us with planning! +++++
+ Adventure Race - The AR will be a 3-hour mass-start event starting at 11am. Competitors will get two maps, each with 16 controls – one for bike, one for foot – but can only carry one punch card with them at a time, so can choose whether they want to bike then run, or run then bike (or mix it up). Competitors get as many controls as they can within the time limit.
Both bike and foot controls can be collected in any order and both will be about 7k on straight line route. Bike controls are mostly on single track but portage and route options are available, foot controls are of intermediate difficulty.
+ Foot Orienteering - There will be 3 normal-style foot orienteering courses: Beginner (3k), Intermediate (5k), and advanced (7k).
+ Courses will close at 2.30pm. If you can, please plan on staying around after your run to help with control pick-up. It should be quick with multiple helpers.
