We'll be running (or riding!) around in the woods at Pocahontas State Park this month. The section of the park that's South of Beach Rd. has terrain that's different from the rest of the park with not much more developed than a nice network of fire roads. Three courses to choose from! The advanced course can be done either on foot or by mountain bike. See below for more details.
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
STARTS: Start any time between noon and 2:00 pm. (Everybody must be back to the start no later than 4:00 pm.) Feel free to arrive any time after 11:45 am.
COST: Maps are $5 each.
LOCATION: The equestrian center off of Beach Road, directly across from the main park entrance. Look for the red & white orienteering arrow signs pointing the way.
PARKING FEE: A parking fee of $7 per car will be collected (unless you have a State Parks parking permit). You can also pay ahead of time with the Viply app (https://www.viplypass.com/virginia-state-parks/).
As always, instruction will be available for beginners or those who would like some help to get started. We can also offer some tips to those who've been out a few times and want to advance their skills a bit.
Bring your own compass, or borrow one of ours (on a first-come basis). Be prepared to leave car keys or an ID as a deposit when borrowing.
Dress appropriately for the weather and for travel both on & off trail. Water, sunscreen, and bug spray are also good items to bring along.
Feel free to post comments or contact one of the organizers if you have any questions!
Be sure to answer the instruction and map questions when you RSVP! This really helps us with planning.
*** Our meets wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers. Please consider offering some of your time at this or another upcoming meet. ***
All courses will be traditional orienteering courses which are to be completed in the numerical order indicated on the map. The advanced course may be completed either on foot or on mountain bike and will be scored separately. Note that helmets must be worn if biking.
