Get some pre-Superbowl exercise on one of Richmond’s hidden gems. Larus Park has surprisingly varied terrain: rocky streams, contour detail, runnable forests, tricky trail network, and sketchy tunnel. We haven’t used Larus for a few years and in that time a bike trail network has been added, and a good-sized chunk of new forest added to the park.
We’ll have 3 courses available: Beginner (3k), Intermediate/Bike (4.5k), & Advanced (5.5k). The intermediate course has been designed to do double duty as both a foot and bike course. Those looking for an extra challenge can do both the advanced foot and intermediate bike for a 10k mini adventure race – arrive early enough to fit both in. In case of rain before or during the event, we may drop the bike option to avoid damage to trails. Beginner instruction will be available and compasses can be borrowed.
STARTS: 11am to 1pm. All competitors should finish by 3pm.
COST: Orienteering maps are $5
LOCATION: Stony Point Road (put Larus Court into your navigation tool). We’re going to be parking on Stony Point Road just past the entrance to Sabot at Stony Point School (we don’t have access to the school this time).
There are NO BATHROOMS at the parking or start. Please use facilities before arriving. There are several gas stations and a McDonalds nearby.
Bring your own compass, or borrow one of ours (on a first-come basis). Be prepared to leave car keys or an ID as a deposit when borrowing.
Dress appropriately for the weather and for travel both on & off trail. The event may get cancelled in case of adverse weather.
Feel free to post comments or contact one of the organizers if you have any questions!
+++++ When you RSVP, please answer the question & indicate: (1) how many of each type of map you will need, (2) if you need beginner instruction, (3) if you can help to collect controls at 3pm. This really helps us with planning! +++++
