Come on out for some cycling & running fun for National Orienteering Day!

This time we've got something a little different. There will be a Score-O course set up and you've got a choice of doing it either on foot or on mountain bike! (We'll be scoring them as separate courses, so runners (or walkers!) don't have to worry about trying to out-run a biker to score well.)

9/15 - Updated Course Details

The 1:15,000 map has 30 controls on. All are within 50 yards of trails. Navigation is easier than a traditional O-event. Fast cyclists may be able to get all or most in the 90 minutes, covering about 8-10 miles. For beginners (walking, running or cycling), controls 1-10 form a 3 mile white course with all controls on or adjacent to trails.

There will be water on the course in two locations, intended primarily for runners, cyclists should carry own water.

Horses have priority on the trails, so be careful if cycling fast.

......

A Score-O is a course with all control locations shown on your map and you try to find as many as you can within the time limit, in any order that you feel is the best route. This is where good decision-making can give you an advantage over people who can run or ride faster!

Start at any time between 12:00 - 2:00 and you'll have 90 minutes to complete your course and get back to the start/finish. Each control you find is worth 10 points, but you'll lose 5 points for every 2 minutes that you go over the 90-minute limit, so be sure to have some way to track your time while you're out there. There will be enough control locations that most people won't find them all in the allotted time!

Biking will be on fire roads with some trails. Mountain bikes or hybrids are recommended for this event.

There will also be a traditional white (beginner-level) course for those who are new to orienteering. As always, instruction will be available for beginners.

Maps are $5 each.

Bike helmets are required for all cyclists.

Where to find us: Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield County, off of Beach Road. We'll have tables set up in the Equestrian Center parking area which is almost directly across Beach Rd (south) from the main park entrance. The park has a $5 parking fee.

Bring your own compass, or borrow one of ours (on a first-come basis). Be prepared to leave car keys or an ID as a deposit when borrowing.

Dress appropriately for the weather and for travel both on & off trail. Water, sunscreen, and bug spray are also good ideas to bring along.

Feel free to post comments or contact one of the organizers if you have any questions!
