Charleston Craft Crew Information Regarding Fees



When I first started CCC, I was unsure of how it would go. I thought I’d create the group and see if anyone signed up. Then, cross my fingers that people would show to my little crafty meetings. I decided then that I was initially going to try my very best not to charge anything for people to attend Meetups. I knew there would be costs for materials and would have to burden the members with those costs. I think this worked out pretty well for a while, but with our group growing (rapidly) and the onset of Pinterest which has gotten all of our creative juices flowing double-time, this doesn’t really make sense for us anymore. So, reluctantly....and with a lot of planning, we’ve decided to change it up a little.


Breakdown of Costs

For most meetups (when actual crafting is involved), there will now be an upfront cost to attend. It will vary from $5 to $10 depending on the particular project. Since we want to be completely transparent when it comes to money, this cost will cover the following items in this order:

Materials: From now on, we’re going to try to provide all or at least most of the materials. This way, you don’t have to worry about driving around town trying to track down every single item needed. We want to make it as easy as possible for all of you to just show up ready to craft!

Room Rental (if applicable): We discovered that Michaels in Mt. Pleasant has a great craft room available. It’s a great room that will hold anywhere from 12 – 24 of us (this means no more sitting on the waiting list for events!) We also love the convenience of having the entire Michaels store at our disposal to shop for our materials before we start or even during if someone decides they want to add something else to their project. However, this convenience comes at a cost. Not all meetups will be taking place here; we’ll still use different spaces from time to time.

Meetup Dues: Any funds left over after #1 and #2 are covered will go towards dues. Here’s why. You may not have known that Meetup charges Organizers a fee to have a Meetup group. Again, since I want to be transparent when it comes to money, I opt for the 6 month charge which is $72/semi-annually or $144/year. Are you surprised by that amount? I know I was! In the beginning, I told myself just to pay the first 6 months myself and see how this whole thing goes. Since then, we’ve grown quite a bit and we seem to be developing a core group of girls who come to meetups on a regular basis as well as new members with every new event. I’ve brought Lindsey in as Co-organizer so she can help with planning & hosting events. This means we can have more of them, more often, too. Broken down between the number of girls who attend the meetups and the frequency with which meetups can now occur, this fee can be paid taking the burden off myself.

Food/Prizes/Etc.: If there are any funds left over once the above 3 have been covered, I’d love to provide you with more food for the meetups and/or a prizes if we hold a contest (a 2nd Pinterest Challenge or Scavenger Hunt, perhaps).


How to Pay

You can pay one of two ways:
  • Before the Meetup by paying me through Paypal. For it to be free, you’d need to pay with your banking info, not your credit card info (they’ll charge you) and send the funds as a “personal gift.” My email to pay me is joycsims@aol.com. Please contact me before you send funds so I know to look for them.
  • When you arrive at the Meetup event by paying with cash. If you don’t have cash on you, we’ll (reluctantly) take a check.


We think this is going to work out well, but of course, this is new and there’s going to be a “trying out” period. So if we have snags or it seems it’s not working out, we’ll regroup and see what we come up with. This is your group, too, and we want everyone to be comfortable with any changes we’re implementing.
