Visit to Charlotte Amateur Astronomers Club for Astrophotography

  • Nov 9, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Have you ever looked at those dazzling photos of Stars & Star Trails, the Moon, Planets, and the Milky Way in awe?  Ever wanted to know how to take images like that?  This is your opportunity.  Join your fellow CPG members in teaming up with the Charlotte Amateur Astronomers Club to visit their observatory and learn about astrophotography.

This event is a long one and a bit outside the normal Charlotte metro area so plan accordingly.  Remember this event is not for the impatient.  But it can be quite rewarding.

Carpooling is recommended so please use the event details to organize or offer your ride.

******AGENDA******

Message from Ken Steiner, Observatory Director:

David,

We are planning on your group on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Be aware that DST has ended so that will impact our times. I am suggesting the following schedule:

4:00-4:30 pm arrive at Observatory and tour of the facilities while it is still light, set up your equipment for later photography.

5:00 pm Brad Draper will present basics of Astro imaging and and show some of his equipment.

6:00 pm Presentation on what is up in the sky tonight.

6:00 pm is Sunset.

6:15pm This might be a time for your dinner. I will assume that your people will be bringing a box dinner. We do have soft drinks available for 50 cents.

After dinner we can do observing and/or photography.

There will be a 1st quarter moon that night which is good for moon photos. Milky way (photography) may be difficult (with the moonlight).

We look forward to seeing you on Nov 9.

Best Regards,

Ken Steiner

    Hi everyone,
Mr. Steiner sent his answer below. Please, write him and say that you are going to be a member. He will be so glad if more people are going to join. It is really cheap the membership and it is a such nice club. Thanks for all that showed the interest. Ken Steiner ( [masked] )

to Jim, draper79, Phil, me Maria,

It was a delight having your group visit our facility; as you gathered we are very proud to show it off to visitors.

I will copy your e-mail to our treasurer Phil Foust. The only additional fee that might be involved beyond the membership of $35.00 is the $10.00 Observatory fee which entitles you to operate the telescopes after your orientation training.

Phil will give you the address for your check; it is not the address at the Observatory. I will work on a follow up date for your group without clouds!

One last note: Thank You for the Wine!

    Best regards,
    Ken Steiner[masked]

Very nice evening even though it did not fully work out, it's the nature of the beast. Very impressive club, seems to have their act together very well, hope to go again sometime. They have probably gained at least one more member. Life is busy and I have little time but even if it's 3-4 times in a year it's a great opportunity for such a small price, I'll look at it more as supporting a good cause.

Here is a somewhat interesting general article Re: Tips for Moon Photography. Being somewhat of a purist, I don't agree with the notion of "cut-n-paste"; but it might prove inevitable/invaluable.
    Hope this helps. -David ...http://digital-photography-school.com/moon-photography-tips-moon-photos

I am assuming a decision will be made the day prior or so depending on weather forecasts? I just saw the long range outlook at its Rain for Thursday with a cold front right behind it. Cold usually equals good clarity for astro photography but LOL rain does not if the front stalls a bit prior to arrival and arrives Saturday.

Sat. looks Partly Cloudy & Cool now. CAAC's main building can accomidate us, as they have scheduled a presentation for us as well; but I will contact Ken prior to "confirm" our numbers & any last minute changes that may need consideration. -David
