Next Meetup

Let's Rappel!!
This meetup will be rappelling only, no climbing. First time rappellers welcome. No experience needed. I have all the gear required. No hike is involved. We park right next to the rappelling spot. However, there is a short but steep scramble from the bottom of the cliff back to the top. If the meetup is full, a waitlist is available. Don't be discouraged, people often cancel close to the date to allow people from the waitlist to move up. Location will be at the Raven's Roost overlook located between mile markers 10 and 11 on the Blueridge Parkway a few miles past Humpback Rocks on the right. Be careful in following your phone or GPS directions as they often INCORRECTLY take people down Rt. 151 to Wintergreen. Get off of I-64 at Exit 99 (top of Afton Mountain) and go South on the Blueridge Parkway about 10.5 miles to the Raven's Roost overlook. Bring water & lunch as well as comfortable clothes that allow easy movement that is appropriate for the temperature. Note - it's almost always chillier and windier at the climbing location than where you're coming from. If anyone would like to carpool, please post your interest in the comments and coordinate directly with others that are going. As would be expected with this type of activity, a liability waiver is required for all attendees prior to participating. Not uncommon to congregate for an adult beverage and a bite afterward at Pro Ra Nata brewery in Crozet.

Raven's Roost Overlook - Blue Ridge Parkway

Mile Post 10.7 Blue Ridge Parkway · Lyndhurst, va

What we're about

This group is primarily geared toward folks with limited or no climbing experience although some of the routes can challenge those with experience. Always wanted to rock climb or rappel but never had the chance? Well now you do! I have all the gear required. We typically meet at Raven's Roost near Humpback rock on the Skyline Drive. No hike is involved. However, there is a short but steep scramble from the bottom of the cliff back to the top. For climbing, we'll be top roping which means all climbers will be tied into a harness with a rope anchor at the top and a belayer below protecting the climber from a fall - the safest type of rock climbing. As would be expected with this type of activity, a liability waiver is mandatory.

If you are interested in more advanced techniques and skills associated with climbing, I definitely recommend Blue Ridge Mountain Guides who can be reached at the website below.
