Winos Play Day - Passport Tastings, BBQ/Picnic and Games

~~Note this is an open format event...arrive any time after 12pm and go at your own pace for tastings. We'll all meet up at the amphitheater~~

Hey Winos!

Belle Marie Winery has hosted several events for us that have been both educational and entertaining. Their super friendly, knowledgeable staff takes great care of us and gives us free reign of the beautiful amphitheater for some serious fun in the sun picnics.

There have been some exciting changes on the winery grounds this year that Belle Marie is eager to share with the winos. They have just established the Escondido Wine & Culinary Campus on the winery grounds, where they'll be holding winemaker dinners, cooking classes and other culinary treats in the future. Belle Marie is inviting all winos and their guests to visit Chateau Castle, home of the brand spanking new Hidden Valley Enoteca. The Enoteca is San Diego's newest and most unique wine tasting room featuring at least 12 different wines from a growing number of boutique wineries that are hidden throughout Escondido Wine Country. This bi-level tasting room features a 40-foot bar that is hand made from 300 year old Cedar trees. Enjoy a wide range of winemaking styles and types of wines from local wineries such as 2 Plank Vineyards, Screaming Chief, Blue Merle Winery, Casa Tiene Vista Vineyard, Coyote Oaks Vineyards, and Bella Toscano.

EVENT INFO: Belle Marie will be setting up a check-in/hospitality room for all Winos R Us members and their guests. Wine can be purchased by the glass or by the bottle all day long. If you'd like to go on a tasting frenzy, you can enjoy 12 pours of your choice from both the Enoteca and Belle Marie tasting rooms (over 10 different wineries) for only $15. A $2 wine glass deposit will give you use of the logo wine glass all day long, which can either be kept as a souvenir or returned to the check-in area to get your $2 back.

But wait...there's more! We've got the beautiful outdoor amphitheater reserved for a good old-fashioned BBQ/picnic and some fun group activities. 4 B's BBQ will be on site preparing sandwiches with their specialty pulled pork, beef brisket, proprietary rubs and sauces (spicy Port reduction sauce, Western style tomato-based sauce, Cansas City style vinegar sauce and a Carolina style mustard sauce). Sandwiches sell for ~$6 and you can buy sides of homemade beans and prosciutto, potato salad, cole slaw, etc. Of course you can also pack your own picnic lunch to enjoy too! Don't forget a blanket or chair, and feel free to bring some toys…Frisbees, beach ball, hula hoops, etc. We'll set up a volleyball/badminton net and also have our usual water balloon toss!

This is a super flexible, open format event. No prepayments are required so you can make your choice on how you want to get your wine on when you arrive. As usual, please keep your RSVPs up to date so the winery staff can be well prepared.

There's plenty of free parking and room for everyone to enjoy. Feel free to invite some friends for a truly unique experience and a ridiculously fun day....CHEERS!

For those who want to participate in the group picnic, what time do you plan to have the sandwiches, etc. Is anyone bringing games of any kind as suggested in the event description

    September 21, 2012

    • Sandy aka The Bubbly O.

I'm interested in the picnic, but wasn't supposed to be in town today, so I'm short on picnic supplies. What should I bring? I might be able to do a Costco run on the way there.

To those of you who will be joining Michael for the pot luck picnic, may I suggest that one of you move the discussion to our discussion board? That way anyone who is interested in joining and discussing the details can chime in without every message getting sent out to the entire RSVP list. Plus you'll know exactly who all is in. It's just the way meetup.com set things up. Thanks and we'll see everyone tomorrow. Don't forget water and sunscreen! :)

      September 21, 2012

    • Tina

Would be nice to know what everyone is planning on bringing so we don't have 12 potato salads :)

      September 21, 2012

  • Tina

Sent Michael an email adding our names to the list for the group picnic (bringing sub sandwiches) but wanted to let the "newbies" know to bring plates, forks, etc for yourselves as well as! These are not usually provided. Michael please correct me if I am wrong. Looking forward to meeting some new people tomorrow and of course trying some new wines!!

I have a bunch of picnic plates...do you know how many I should bring?

      September 21, 2012

    • Tina

It doesn't seem clear as to how many people are joining in so I say cover yourself and if you want to bring a few extra just in case that would be awesome. You never know...

Kari, it does sound up my alley. :) done some wine tasting but eager to learn more. See you there.

    September 20, 2012

  • Karen

Of course! Newbies are more than welcome! :) Normally our events here start at a specific time for a structured, group tasting followed by a picnic. This event is a completely different, more informal format. The Belle Marie staff will be taking care of the check-ins while the organizers roam the grounds in the different tasting rooms and set up the amphitheater. It will be much easier to spot the organizers during the picnic when we get some games going. We would love to meet you and make introductions!
