Almost Full Moon Paddle on Occoquan Reservoir (Cross Posted)

Almost Full Moon Paddle On Occoquan Reservoir

This event is cross posted with the Nova Outdoors & Paddle Club

This event is Memorial Day weekend.  Some of  you including myself will be over in Chestertown for paddling events at the Chestertown Tea Party with CKA and Jake's Second Half Rally Meetup group.

To give everyone more opportunities to paddle over the holiday weekend, Randi K from the NOVA Outdoors & Paddle Club has generously agreed to save 15 slots for CKA members at this paddle.  THANK YOU Randi!  I will not be there but I am confident that you will be in competent hands under Randi and James' guidance for a beautiful moon light paddle whether the moon is actually full or not.

While it is technically a NOVA Outdoors & Paddle Club event you can sign up by RSVP'ing here.  You don't need to join Randi's group to attend although I'm sure she wouldn't mind and it would give you even more opportunities to paddle.  I know several of you already belong to NOVA Outdoors and Paddle.

Please note that The put in is behind locked gates at the Bull Run Marina.  To gain access you need to get through those gates between 7:30 and 7:45.  If you don't make it through the gate during that window you will be left outside unable to attend.  There are NO rental boats available for this paddle.  For the rest of the details I've cut and pasted Randi's post below.

Here's what Randi wrote:

Please join us for an evening paddle on the Occoquan Reservoir. The almost-full moon will rise at 8:01 pm. We will put in at Bull Run Marina at 7:45 pm. We will paddle down river 4 to 5 miles and then turn around and paddle back upstream. This will be a 4 hour 8-10 mile paddle on a night we hope will have good stargazing weather. We need good weather for this, cross your fingers for golden light and soft dusk with a big moon.

The dark reservoir is quiet, and weirdly primeval. Ask Kat about the dinosaur calls...

Bull Run Marina is gated. We will use a member's key to gain entrance and lock it again after all our boats are down at the ramp. We will unlock it again when we go to leave. Because of the locked gate paddlers need to be on time (7:30 to 7:45) for this event so that they don't find themselves locked out.

Dollar store glow sticks work great to illuminate boats so we can see each other.

Please bring a small deck light for your boat. Please do not expect to use head lamps unless we have an emergency as they blind all the paddlers around the wearer.

This event is will cancel for bad weather. Please be alert to small changes in timing as the date approaches.

Details:

Gate will be unlocked at 7:30 pm, come on time, after 7:45 gate locks.

There are NO rentals here, the marina is not staffed by the park service.

Bathrooms are minimal and sometime locked, but don johns may be available

Sunset: 8:21 pm

Moonrise: 8:01 pm

Total Darkness descends: 10:13 pm

If you are bug-o-phobic this might not be the paddle for you as the bugs love our lights.

Bring water, snack if you are inclined, and bug spray

Standard Safety Disclaimer:

Participants must wear life vests aka PFD's while on the water and carry a sound making device such as a whistle. Please carry a light making device such as a deck light.

Please check the weather and gauge your own abilities before coming out to play with us.

You, and you alone, are responsible for your personal safety.

Yes indeed, the wind did make for a challenge. The up side was the incredible moon. We cast "moon shadows," it was that bright. The paddlers that decided to brave it were all up to the challenge, thanks folks!

The wind and cooler weather put a little bit of a damper on things, but the moon came out and was very bright!

Yes, indeed, the traffic may be horrible. I have a key to the marina as do several others attending. Fear not, we will not leave anyone locked in the marina or other unfunny things. We are also aiming to have the gate unlocked at the beginning of the event for a larger amount of time but stated such a small window to make sure people know that we will be locking the gate at 7:45. And yes, I will certainly email my cell number to all the attendees. Also, I have a smart phone. The last time we ran this event we received email up to the last moment we were leaving the launch.

Laura-I commute DC to Lake Ridge area. If I leave DC after 6:30 on a non-holiday evening, I can get home in 60 to 90 minutes if there are no problems. If you are leaving Columbia, I'd allow 4 hours. It might take 2 or 5. Several years ago it took me 4 hours plus DC to Occoquon on a Memorial Weekend Friday. I am taking this Friday off as I just don't want to fight the traffic to get to Bull Run by 7. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but after 25 years of the Shirley Highway, I have too many bitter experiences.

Dc is a horrible place to live because of the traffic. we Baltimoreans know and avoid it. unfortunately many of us cannot take off and leave work too early.

I have a few questions- If the gate is locked after we go in, how do we get out??
Randi- Please email me your cell number as I have not been there before and would like a contact number> you can email me thru this system. Thank you.
I am going to try and leave Columbia by 5-5:30. Will I make it in time?

You have to spend the night there Laura. Of course I'm kidding. Someone on the paddle will have a key to let you out. With the new express lanes on 495 just use your easy pass and you'll make it without a problem.

anticipating the usual HORRID DC area traffic for this one and trying to get out of Super Bowl Champion Baltimore /Towson by 230. hope i make it by 7 pm. anybody up for a burger joint /pub dinner nearby before the paddle ? I will locate something....

We've never had a problem parking inside the gate in the past, key-holders or not. Hope that continues. There is an upper and lower lot with in the gate and a really large overflow lot outside the gate and across the street.
