Monocacy River - The Adventure Continues- The Next 14 miles

  • Jun 21, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • Pinecliff Park Boat Ramp

Monocacy River Adventure - The Next 14 Miles With Shuttle.

RSVP's for this event open tonight at 9:00 PM

The actual attendance limit for this paddle is 30 paddlers.  6 spots have been set aside for people who will be renting kayaks.  If you are a renter on the waiting list I will move you to the attending list.   Those spots not filled by renters 24 hours before the paddle will be filled with members on the waiting list who have paid the voluntary dues.  Everyone has the same chance to sign up for the first 24 slots.

We did the previous 12 miles earlier this spring and I think it's time to get back to some more of the Monocacy.  We'll get it all done before the end of the season/

Saturday, June 21st will find us setting shuttle at 10:00 AM from the Pinecliff Park Boat Ramp on the Monocacy River for a 14 paddle with the current from the Devilbiss Bridge on the Monocacy to Pinecliff Park. Please plan to arrive at Pinecliff Park Boat Ramp no later than 10:00 AM for the shuttle.

This section of the Monocacy is mostly flatwater with a few minor (Class I) whitewater features.  Nothing most parents wouldn't let their kids go down in an inner tube.  With lots of rain this year we should have plenty of water.  This is an relatively easy paddle but you will need to paddle for about 4.5 hours

Pack a lunch for a rest stop in a small park at about the 8 mile point.  The good news is that there are portable toilets there.  Total paddle time on the water should be about 4.5 to 5 hours.  Factoring in shuttle time and a lunch stop, we should be back to the take out around 4:30 but will still need to retrieve cars at the put in so this will be a full day event.

There are rental boats available for this paddle at the weekend price of $55.00 for the day, delivered to the put in with paddle and PFD. Please be sure to make your rental request during the RSVP process.

I have to cancel, not because of weather (not afraid of a little possible rain). And not because I was possibly going to to NYC the next day (as I had said I might, Chuck. That's been most probably moved to next weekend) but because at the dog park this evening my toy poodle was viciously attacked by a larger dog and then a pit bull joined in, out of pure blood lust, to try and maul the pup (mine) who was already down on his back and who hadn't provoked a damned thing. He's okay, and I think I'm the one more in shock, still shaken by the entire traumatic ordeal. I just feel I have to be here with him instead of leaving him alone all that time after what just happened. From now on, even if no one is on the small pup side of the park (very rare) we'll never venture into the big breed side again even though it's never been a problem before. Anyway, hope everyone has a great time! Sorry I have to just sit it out and get over all that.

Thanks, Janet. He's okay. I think I was more shaken up than he was. We went back to the park (small breed side) last night and he had a great time.

6:45 AM Weather Update: The chance of rain while we will be on the water today has dropped to 20% and there is even a pretty good chance the sun will show up later in the day. See you all soon1

We will be having beautiful day for paddling up in Pennsylvania too!!!

Just a heads up on the weather tomorrow. There is a 50% chance of what they are calling a "few showers" in the morning that drops to 40% around noon and keeps going down from there.

These are not thunderstorms and that 50% really does also mean there is a 50% chance of sunny blue skies too.

I really don't see any reason to cancel the paddle. If I did I would end up canceling half of the paddles all summer long because we see a forecast like this quite frequently.

More often than not we luck out and don't get any rain but you should expect rain when you wake up and some on the drive to Frederick but it certainly isn't going to rain throughout the day tomorrow.

If anything I may set the start time back by a half hour or an hour if that looks like it will help. That would have us off the water at 5:00 instead of 4:00

I will make the decision by the time I send my DETAILS email tonight. Right now there seems to be a trend where the rain chances are reducing earlier in the day.so we probably don't need to start a little later

I don't mind getting sprinkled on....we get drops of water on us when paddling anyway. I don't think they are calling for a deluge anyway.
