CKA Introduction to Sea Kayaking Skills

This 2.5 hour course is designed for those who are new to kayaking or those who have been kayaking for a while with no formal instruction.  It is guaranteed to make your time on the water a lot more safe and enjoyable.

The first 30  minutes will be outdoor classroom instruction on shore.  The rest of the time will be spent in kayaks on the water.

A minimum of 3 students is required for the class to take place with a maximum attendance limit of 5 students.  The class will be offered at least twice a month during June, July and August.

The cost of the class is $49.00 for those with their own kayaks.  Rental kayaks along with a paddle and PFD are available for an additional $15.00.

Chuck, is the instructor for this class.  He is an American Canoe Association certified kayak instructor with 20 years of experience in a kayak including 7 years as a kayak instructor and member of the management team with LL Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools.

The class will be held at the Pig Tail Recreation Area on Triadelphia Reservoir.

To paddle at Traidelphia or Rocky Gorge Reservoirs you must purchase a day use permit for $6.00 or a season permit for $70.00. They can be purchased online at or at the shack near Brighton Dam (doesn't open until 7:00 AM).  With 7 different kayak launch point between them we will paddle enough on Triadelphia and Rocky Gorge to more than pay for the season pass if you attend regularly.

To reserve a rental kayak for the class, simply answer the rental question when you RSVP.  You can bring cash to the class to pay the additional $15 for the kayak rental or just change the PayPal amount to $64.00 when you pay online.

The boats used for the course are quite new $1300 - $1500 real sea kayaks.    They cost an average of about $1000 more than the kayaks used in many other courses offered in the area and give students the opportunity to learn and do much more in a kayak than the cheaper boats can.

You must pay the class fee at the time you RSVP.  No refunds will be given of you cancel less than 24 hours before the class.  Credit will be given towards future course offerings if you cancel more than 24 hours before the class.  The class is held rain or shine except in the most inclement weather.
