Route 573, Umatilla, FL
Florida HangCon 17
This is an event near Ocala, Florida that LIsa S has attended for the past couple years. She comes back every year ranting and raving about how fantastic it was, the stunningly beautiful places she paddled and how little it cost. In previous years they have had over 300 attendees.
It appears to be well organized by a group of people on HammockForums.net. To attend you will need to register as a member the forum and then sign up on a public spreadsheet using your forum name. Lisa's forum name is "Early Bird" and mine is "Kayak Chuck".
They advocate a donation of $5 to $10 per day for the number of days you are attending. For that donation you will get a place to camp for 4 nights, breakfast and dinner most days and a number of guided activities to attend. Those activities include kayaking options every day but also include hikes and a number of other things.
If you look at a map of the Ocala National Forest you will see from all of the water in the area there are a TON of kayaking options nearby like Silver Springs and Juniper Springs to name a couple. It looks to me like you could do a different really neat paddle in the area every day for at least a month and still not see it all. I have led paddling trips to some of the locations in the area.
While the event is sponsored by a hammock camping group they are very tolerant of tents but will not tolerate trailers, RV's and that sort of thing. Do expect them to tell you why hammocks are better if you bring a tent though. There are no electrical hook ups available.
Lisa and I will be going down at least one day early or staying at least one day late in southern Georgia where cheap $50 a night motel rooms are extremely abundant. we may do both one day before and one day after. This would be in addition to the dates posted above. There are a number of paddling trips in that area which I have led trips on and am very familiar with that we could pick from for some additional paddling time down there.
I want to point out that Rick and I will also be offering our Jacksonville and Tampa trips again this year. On those we will be staying in gorgeous high end vacation rental houses so the cost of those trips will be considerably more. We will also be paddling to different locations. If the price of those trips is a little bit steep for you here's something you can do for less than $100 plus gas
Here is the link to the HangCon description and details on HammockForums.net. Please be sure to sign up there if sign up there.
Don't have a boat but still want to go? there will be 2 rental kayaks (with paddle and PFD} available for $100 for about 5 days of paddling. Just comment below to request one. You'll need to bring your own camping gear. It may be possible to pick you up at a local airport if you'd prefer to drive down. Have your own boat but want to fly? I'd be willing to transport your boat for $100.00. But there is only room for two additional boats on the car whether it's your own or a rental boat.
