Discover Daniels Day

Discover Daniels Day Celebration

I was going to schedule a paddle with shuttle from Woodstock to Daniels for Saturday and then I remembered that Daniels Road was going to be closed for the day because of some festival. A woman from the Methodist Church made a special effort to find me one Wednesday Night a couple months ago to tell me about it. I did an Internet search to come up with the details and it sounds like a really neat event.

We spend a lot of time on Wednesday Nights during the season paddling from the Daniels Area of Patapsco State Park. People ask lots of questions about the area that I am woefully unable to answer. The celebration has tons of answers about the history of the town, the dam, the park and everything else there at the end of Daniels Road.

The festival is co-sponsored by:

Patapsco Heritage Greenway
Gary Memorial United Methodist Church
Boy Scout Troop 1997
Hollifield Elementary School

Partners providing additional resources include:

C.R. Daniels, Inc.
American Rivers
B&O Railroad Museum
Maryland DNR
Howard County Parks and Rec
Howard County Tourism
Ledo's Pizza
Patapsco Valley State Park

There will be a ton of interesting stuff to see and do but most important there will be food being sold and served by the Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts. We can hike along the trails in the area in addition to the other activities and historical talks. For more details see the link below but I hope some of you will join me for a fun filled and interesting day at Daniels

I'm giving a talk at this event about native Patapsco fishes and clams as well as the role the fish ladder plays. It's going to be a pretty interesting day. Since I live on Daniels Road right above the dam, I'm looking forward to meeting and talking to some of the people who grew up in the now abandoned mill town of Daniels.

Did you know that directly across from the kayak launch on Daniels there used to be a baseball diamond? That there is an intact Native American shelter a short walk from the launch? That the cliffs and woods around Daniels have a thriving population of copperhead snakes?

For more local facts, come to the event!

Hey Mike - Glad to hear that we will see you there. I assume your talk is going to include the eels that go from the Patapsco to the Sargasso Sea? I'm excited to learn more about the Patapsco and Daniels.

unagi (freshwater eel) has been consumed in Japan since thousands of years ago. As it's rich in protein, vitamin A and E, and so on, it's believed that unagi gives people stamina. For this reason, it's eaten the most during the hottest time of the year in Japan. It's a Japanese delicacy. ( but I don't like it)

    Hi Chuck
you might want to change your site address from Ellicott City, Ma
    to EC, Md.
When I was reading this page I noticed the state had been changed...
Is there an Ellicott City, Ma?

Thanks for pointing that out James. I just used the information someone else had put in the Meetup system for the school's address. It now correctly shows Maryland

It was a little bit confusing, and then I thought why would anyone want to go to a place that might have been affected by that storm... But after reading the description, I realized that you were talking about a place in MD.
