Wildflower walk, as promised

Some of you may remember cutting buckthorn at Somme Prairie Grove back in the winter months (December 8, February 16), and that I promised to lead a wildflower walk when the place was in bloom. Well, that time has arrived.

There are no herculean workday labors (which also means, no bonfire) but just a gentle walk around a place you helped to thrive. You will see special prairie plants and birds and insects doing what they have done for thousands of years, in one of the healthiest habitats in Chicagoland. I will walk us around the trails, identifying plants and telling their stories, and we will visit the area that we worked on and see what it will look like years from now. Do come and give yourself a pat on the back for what you did.

We will leave from the Somme Woods parking lot at 4P (don't be late) and then walk across the street to Somme Prairie Grove. The Somme Woods FPDCC parking lot has a red sign, and is at the NE corner of Dundee & Waukegan Roads in Northbrook. It is ~1 mile east of the Dundee Rd exit off of I-94/Edens.

Since there is no bonfire and it will be hot, we won't be cooking up brats in the dutch oven or making bacon s'mores (yes, that was bacon s'mores - Spencer, you are a freaking redneck culinary genius) like last time. Instead, bring water & stay hydrated. Also wear comfortable clothes & shoes. And bring bug dope, as the ticks tend to be impressive in our prairies in summer. We will have to be out of the preserve by ~8P (sunset ~8:30), but the low angle light makes for great photography if you want some great wildflower shots. I will be bringing my camera.

There is no limit on the number of people who can attend, but please do sign up if you intend to come. If the group gets large, I will break it up into smaller groups on site, as it can get unwieldy talking to too many people at once. The usual $5 fee is waived since this is basically payback for having volunteered ... although don't feel excluded from attending if you were not able to go to the winter workdays.

Let me know if you are willing to drive others or if you need a ride. I will arrange carpools as best I can, however, I may not be able to accommodate everyone if a lot of people sign up who need rides.

Afterwards, if anyone is motivated, we could stop in Glenview at Hackneys or Meier's for burgers.

Joe clearly has a a lot of expertise about prairie plants in general, Somme Prairie Grove specifically, and hiking and he shares it freely and congenially.
The weather was great and the group friendly and fun.
The only thing that could be better in future would be to have a smaller group or have the hike on a different time of day/day of week so that everyone could hear. Joe had to divide our group in two and repeat to make sure we could all hear above nearby highway and airplane noise.

I would have like to attended! Didn't hear about it in time (ie: I didn't check my email). Oh well. I'll see you next winter if we are doing the tree trimming bonfire thing again!

Joe, Thanks again for organizing the walk, and sharing your wildflower knowledge. I am glad I know more wildflowers now.
