Manistee River Backpacking and Kayaking/canoeing - July Edition

  • Jul 26, 2013 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is an intermediate trip combining backpacking and canoe/kayaking along the scenic Manistee River Trail. Please read the following information carefully before signing up.

Who can participate:

- Participants should have completed a bootcamp or have sufficient backpacking experience

If you had prior backpacking experiences but never hiked with the group, please email us a brief description of your experiences

ITINERARY:

- Friday: we will car camp at the campground( detail will be provided later)

- Saturday:we will hike along the Manistee River Trail for approximately 9-11 miles with our backpacks on . We will either find backpacking sites or camp at  an established Campground.

- Sunday: Hike approximately 2-3 miles to pick up our boats and begin our paddling ( about 4 hours), ending back at Red Bridge where our cars are parked. The rental shop will transport our backpacks to the livery, a short drive from Red Bridge.( So no worry about carrying your backpacks on the boat!) After picking up our gear we’ll grab lunch on the way back to Chicago.

Canoes or Kayaks:

You can choose between canoes or single kayaks. Their single kayaks are open kayaks, no prior experiences required. It is also possible to rent tandem kayaks. However, according to the rental manager, it is easier to tip over with tandems.

You will be asked if you prefer canoe or kayak when rsvp. We will do our best to accommodate. However, it is not 100% guaranteed. The organizers reserve the rights to make the final arrangements.

COSTS:
- Canoe/Tandem Kayaks: $18.50/person
- Kayak: $37/person
- Meetup fee: $5/person

- Seaton Creek Campground (about $1-$2,depending on the final numbers of participants)

- Please prepare to share the costs of gasoline with the driver.

You will need to pay $20 when rsvp via PayPal. We will not refund unless organizers cancel the trip or we could find someone to fill your spot- please be sure that you can attend before committing to this trip!!

You will need to bring the cash to the trip to pay for the rest rental fees. The exact amount depends on whether you choose a canoe or a single kayak. We will let you know the final numbers before the trip.

Other PARTICIPANT EXPECTATIONS:

- There are some good hills and the temperature in July could be very hot and humid.

- MUST BE ABLE TO SWIM

- This trip is fine for beginning kayakers

- Car pool will be arranged. You will receive an email asking for car pool info 8 to 10 days before the trip. We will send out the car pool info with more details 3-4 days before the trip.

- No dogs or minors; no +1 (guests have to sign up themselves)

- We practice Leave No Trace outdoor ethics (www.lnt.org) and expect the same from all participants

- All participants are responsible for their own meals and obtaining the essential equipment for the trip and having the knowledge to use the equipment (shelter, backpack, gear, etc). If you want to share any gear/foods with others, please feel free to use message board.

Please let us know if you have any question!

Hi Yunhui, the RSVP is now full. However, my wife will be sharing my canoe. Can I just pay another 20 bucks for her myself? Looking very forward to this! I've hiked the MRT/NCT loop a couple times and have always wanted to canoe this section of the Manistee!

Hello! Sorry, I am not very nifty with this website yet. I do, however, have extensive backpacking experience all over the world. I have also done this very trail (NCT/MRT loop) solo a few times. I have appropriate equipment. My wife, Yuan Wang, will write a few lines when she RSVPs later tonight/tomorrow morning, but she has gotten some decent experience tagging along with me over the years. Finally, that pic was deleted (sorry, I thought I was updating my profile pic!).

Dan, no problem. Thank you for the note. For now, Yuan will be considered as the second one on the waiting. Please ask her to sign up as soon as she can!
