RSVP opens on 6/14 (Friday) at 7 PM
This is an intermediate weekend trip combining hiking and canoe/kayaking along the scenic Manistee River Trail in Michigan.
Please read the following information carefully before signing up.
Friday: Arrive at camp and car camp at an established Seaton Creek NFS campground. Details to be provided.
Saturday: Day hike (approx. 23 miles) down the North County Trail and back up the Manistee River Trail (Seaton Creek NFS Campground to Red Bridge and back to Seaton Creek NFS Campground). Hikers can opt for a shorter day hike. Car camping at Seaton Creek NFS Campground Saturday night.
Sunday: Early Rise! Hike 2 miles to Consumers Power Canoe Portage at Hodenpyl Dam to pick up our boats and begin a gentle 4-hour paddle, concluding at Red Bridge where our cars are parked. The rental shop will transport any gear to the livery, a short drive from Red Bridge. After picking up our gear we’ll shuttle any cars around and grab lunch on the way back to Chicago.
- Canoe/Double Kayak: $20/person
- Single Kayak: $40/person
- Meetup fee: $5/person (non-refundable)
- Boat transportation fee: $5 per person
- Friday and Saturday night campsite: $7 per person
- Gasoline and tolls split with your carpool. Note that if we end up having to rent a car, the rental cost will be split among every one without a car.
$27 RSVP fee via PayPal. This fee includes the $5 Meetup fee, $10 boat deposit, $5 boat transportation fee, and $7 Friday and Saturday night campsite fee. No refunds unless we can find someone to fill your spot on the trip.
You will need to bring cash to the trip to pay for the remaining boat rental fee. The amount will depend on your choice of a canoe or kayak. We'll settle up during the trip.
Please indicate your preference for a single-person kayak, tandem kayak, or to share a canoe on the mandatory RSVP question when signing up. The single-person kayaks are "sit-in" or "sit-on-top ". The tandem kayak is "sit-in". We will do our best to accommodate your preference, but reserve the right to make the final arrangements as needed. If you don't indicate your preference when signing up, you will default to a sit-on-top single kayak.
This is an Intermediate level trip. Participants should have attended a bootcamp or have sufficient hiking experience. No paddling experience is required.
All participants are responsible for obtaining the essential equipment for the trip (shelter, day pack, rain gear, etc). Potable water and vault toilets are available at the Red Bridge campground.
Meals are not planned. Bring your own food.
Hiking can be a strenuous cardiovascular exercise. Participants should be in reasonably good health and physical fitness.
August can bring hot/humid weather and buggy conditions. Plan accordingly. Beware of poison ivy. Stay hydrated! Don't forget any medications, prescription eyewear, sunscreen, etc.
You are ultimately responsible for your own comfort and safety.
