Thanksgiving backpacking trip - Advanced

This will be a long weekend backpacking trip in the beautiful late fall (or winterlike?) landscape of the Red River Gorge in Kentucky.

I love backpacking this time of year! And I'd love to have you join me, but fair warning: The trip is designed for experienced backpackers with club experience. Email one of the organizers if you any questions about your readiness. Or if you're new to the club, we may make exceptions. Just let us know about your other backpacking experience.

Thursday morning, Nov. 22nd (Thanksgiving Day)

Carpools leave the Chicago are by ~8:00 a.m. Drive approximately 7 hours to the gorge, stopping for lunch along the way. There is a one hour time change and a 5:20pm sunset, the goal will be to set up before dark. We'll start our hike and camp a short way from the cars, or perhaps we'll car camp the first night - TBD

Friday - Sat

Get an early start Friday, and complete two full days of backpacking. The exact route will be finalized later, but expect to hike ~25 rugged miles over these two days.

Sunday, Nov. 25th

Hike back to the cars.
Get lunch in the area and return to Chicago by ~9pm

  • We practice Leave No Trace and expect that everyone attending is also committed to these principles.
  • This is an advanced trip due to the rugged terrain, short daylight hours, and potential for cold weather.
  • No add-ons. If your friend wants to attend, please ask him/her to sign up for the meetup site and join the trip through normal procedures.
  • No pets, children, or other dependents.
  • The waitlist will be governed by a strict "first come, first served" policy

Getting there

Organizers will make the car pool arrangements, within reason, so that everyone may attend. They will plan the route of the trip, coordinate any needed logistics, and facilitate any details of the trip related to requirements of the park location.

Details on carpool arrangements, directions and contact information will be determined about a week before the trip.

Cost is $5.00 per person payable at the time of sign up.

Hey all, Akiko can no longer make the trip. Would anyone else like to share a tent? Thanks! Si

Hi all, I am very much looking forward to Thursday! Quick question: Does anyone want to split the load on a tent? It could either be one that you have, or I can borrow one from a friend. Si

Great, I will borrow my room-mate's 2 man halfdome tent. We can split the parts and it will be light for both of us to carry. See you soon

This trip sounds exiciting and works perfectly with my schedule. I have couple of questions since it is listed advanced and also with regards to food. I will be attending today's general meeting, whom I should talk to during meeting?

Parag, Thank for the email. I forward it to Mike and he will call you tomorrow to better understand your experiences.

I've just sent an email asking for carpool information. Let me know if you did not receive the message (check your spam folder first).

    Hi Parag,
Sorry that neither Mike nor I will attend the meeting today.
Please send us an email to describe your backpacking experiences and we can answer your questions over email or phone.

I've sent emails to a few of the newer members asking about backpacking experience. Thanks for the responses.
Alex, I did not hear from you. Did you get my message from Oct 9th?

Hi all, Hui and I were pleasantly surprised with all the interest in the trip. We opened up more spots.

@Gustavo, we don't have space right now. I am checking with the park, and I may open up more space on the trip. Of course, it is possible that someone else will change his RSVP too.
@Bich, sorry. We're definitely going to miss Thanksgiving for this trip, and you won't have time to catch up with us on Friday. I hope you join us on another weekend.

OK, this is my Hail Mary pass. Would love to check out the Gorge, but do not want to miss Turkey Day with the niece and nephew, so would like to drive out on Fri AM (strike 1), need to drive with someone with a GREAT sense of direction to compensate for my utter lack thereof (strike 2), currently do not have a tent (strike 3), and all the spots are full (am I out?).
