Yankee Springs: Long Lake Outdoor Center Cabin Trip

Long Lake Outdoor Center is a privately-operated part of the Yankee Springs State Recreation Area in Middleville, Michigan, which is made up of the former hunting and fishing lands of the Ottowa, Ojibway, and Pottowatomi tribes. The center has been in continuous operation since it opened in 1939, and was registered as a Michigan historical site in the 1990’s.

The 5,200-acre park has miles of excellent hiking trails, and if there is enough snow in the ground (a good possibility in February) there are just as many excellent cross-country ski trails.

This trip is open to all backpackers, from absolute beginners through seasoned trail veterans. Although we will not be sleeping outside in tents, it will still be cold and you will need the gear and know-how to deal with these conditions.

We have reserved the Roadhouse cabin, which can accommodate up to 12 people. Vault toilets are nearby, but the water pumps DO NOT work in winter. Bring all of your own water. A gas furnace provides warmth in cold weather, and there is an outdoor fire circle.

Guests should provide all basic necessities for camping in the cabin. This includes (but is not limited to) food, cooking equipment, a light source, first aid kit, warm clothing and a sleeping bag.

Total Trip Fee: $30/person for Friday and Saturday nights (includes $17 cabin rental, $5 Meetup fee, and $8 firewood fee).

REMINDER: I need a response to the carpool information request by 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday, 1-31) so that I can get started putting carpools together. If you don't respond, I'll have to assume you no longer want to go on the trip. If you have already responded, thanks!

Because so many people were on the waitlist, and because we have enough organizers on this trip to manage it, Doug, Spencer, and I decided to add another cabin. As of Thursday, January 17, everyone who was on the waitlist is now going on the trip.

HOWEVER, because I added you manually, you have not yet paid for the trip. Please use the PayPal link on the event page to settle up. If you don’t pay in by Friday, January 25, I will drop you from the trip. But I’d rather everyone paid, because I’m on the hook for the difference if you don’t.

Thanks, and see you in February.

    Christopher
