JUNE Chicago Big Data Meetup - Big Data with Northshore University Health

We look forward to seeing all of you on Monday evening for our June Big Data Analytics Event!

Due to a wealth of great information from both of our speakers, we've asked Jim Scott to move his Hadoop-Apache Spark talk to July instead (they graciously agreed and will be back and with a longer talk on the same topic - soon to be posted - in July!)...and Chad Konchak will present on an expanded scope of the listed big data for healthcare presentation.

Please note the start time is now 6:30pm and the location is Phil Stefani's at 437 Rush Street.  As you enter, please go to your right and the group will meet at the bar area.  (Cash Bar event so.. please... at minimum purchase a beverage or a snack off the menu - to make sure we are welcome back for future events!  Phil Stefani's is graciously providing some light snacks for the group upon our arrival.)

Schedule

Networking from 6:30-7:00 pm (Bar Area)

Presentation will start at 7:00 pm  (on the 2nd Floor).  *There is no cash bar on this level so please order when you arrive to take with you.

Networking and Discussions 8:00-8:30 pm

SPEAKER

Health Care Big Data Use Case

Chad W. Konchak, MBA, Director, Clinical Analytics

Health Information Technology @ NorthShore University HealthSystem

NorthShore University HealthSystem's mission is to leverage clinical data to improve the quality and efficiency of care provided across their system. Some of the examples include using their data to mine the patterns in blood pressure measures to identify undiagnosed hypertension.

They won the 2013 informatics innovator of the year award for this work: http://www.healthcare-informatics.com/article/healthcare-informatic-inovator-awards-first-place-winner-northshore-university-health-system

Other work includes predictive modeling to identify chronic disease patients at risk for hospitalization, modeling to ‘build a better quality scorecard’ for physicians, real-time clinical decision support for clinicians in a variety of areas, GIS visualizations such as in a new tool called ‘What’s Going Around’ which gives clinicians real-time displays of syndromic epidemiology in our EMR.

Great meetup -- thanks to Kim and Renee! Chad did a great job presenting, and It was nice to meet so many engaging people as well. It's good to see analytics being truly applied (much harder than it may sound to someone who hasn't done it) to healthcare data to lower costs and increase positive outcomes. Loved the "real world" tips like the value of embedding SMEs in the analytics team. Looking forward to the next one!

Chad did a phenomenal job of unpacking complex healthcare challenges and presenting application of Analytics to a broader audience from various industries. His team did a great job taking data science to another level to help patients in the Chicagoland area. Thanks for all you do to impact the healthcare community in a positive way and thanks to the organizers, Kim and Renee. Cheers! Rajiv

The speaker discussed the application of BI techniques with predictive models to shed light on key health and cost drivers. He did not discuss an application of Big Data.
