*****About the Talk*****

Well crafted data visualizations are indistinguishable from magic: information miraculously transforms itself into visual shapes that leap from the computer screen across an open space of one meter into our eyes and brains for near instantaneous recognition of features and patterns. Really? How does that work?

This talk with explore the foundations of visualization theory and how it applies to visualization practice. We will examine aspects of human vision, pre-attentive perception, visual encoding channels, color representation and more; all with an eye towards better understanding how the magic of data visualization works, and how we can use that understanding to craft ever more effective visualizations.
