Welcome to the first meeting of the Chicago Esoteric Book Club!
In this group, we will be reading and discussing Dion Fortune's Mystical Qabalah. Fortune was a Christian Qabalist who became influential in the foundations of Wicca and other modern Pagan practices. While this was her path, the information in this book is a suitable starting point for anyone interested in general occult philosophy, not even limited to Right-Hand Path. You may find yourself disagreeing with a lot of what is written, and that's great! The book is far from the sole text on the subject, and questioning aspects of it can help you further develop your own path and gain a greater understanding of yourself.
For the first meeting, please read sections 1 - 3 (The Yoga of the West, The Choice of a Path, and The Method of the Qabalah). If you have no prior experience, you may find some of the material a bit dense or have questions about some of the terminology. You are not expected to fully understand everything at even first or second read, and basic supplemental materials will be provided. Our main focus this meeting will be discussing our views on why Qabalah is worth studying, the history, and exchanging basic ideas about the concept. It is going to be fairly low-key and low pressure, though for those who stay in the group, keep in mind that the book does get more intense past the introduction.
When reading, we ask that you keep in mind the historical and cultural context of the text. Some of the proposed ideas are not appropriate for our modern world, and these are not aspects we want to focus on -- since Qabalah is a living tradition, we need to keep in mind that some views in the surrounding philosophies may no longer serve us.
As we are meeting at a coffee shop, please be prepared to purchase your own drink or snack. The location (The Perfect Cup) is short walking distance from the Damen Brown Line and is also accessible via bus.
Hope to see you there!
(NOTE: we changed the time from 7 PM to 6:30 PM, so make sure you mark your calendar correctly)
