Hi friends, "Burning" by the Korean master Lee Chang-dong is now on NETFLIX for those of us who didn't have a chance to see it at the Music Box with our meetup. It's a mysterious, haunting, and controversial sort of thriller based on a short story ("Barn Burning") by Haruki Murakami. I adore the director and this film but some friends had different takes on it. Let's get together at Lady Gregory for dinner and discuss both the movie and the Murakami story that inspired it. You can read the short story here:
Reading the short story before our dinner will help us understand the movie better.
You can find an alternative 1992 translation of the Murakami very short story in the "photos" section of this web page (5 screen shots).
In the film several references are made to a Faulkner story with the same title. You can read it here: http://faculty.weber.edu/jyoung/english%206710/barn%20burning.pdf
Again, the movie is on Netflix.
Hope to see you then!
