What we're about
This is a novel writing and reading group for people engaged in experimental literary fiction: anything from DFW to Sergio De La Pava, Tao Lin to Tan Tin, Maggie Nelson, William Vollmann, Perec & Oulipo, Thomas Bernhard, Joyce and Proust of course, Sebald & followers, Yamashita, Bolano, Roa Bastos, Schmidt, Pessoa, Gombrowicz, Musil...
You can be in the middle of a writing project, or just willing to put in the effort to read longer excerpts of others' work. I'm testing the waters to see who else in Chicago might be embarked or immersed in longer, complex, multi-year projects, and interested in engaging in a sympathetic and patient way. The idea is to gather a group of patient readers and critics: some may be writing long texts; others may be making their way through Musil, Proust, etc.; we'll read everyone's texts together.
I teach experimental writing at the School of the Art Institute, but I am also at work on a large-scale project of non-genre fiction. I'm looking for fellow readers and writers who might benefit from detailed reader's responses of the sort that aren't possible in shorter critique sessions.
Meetup, university groups, and NaNoWriMo aren't doing much: but I bet there are more of us out there!
