SkepticSlam!

  • Location to be announced

    TBD, Chicago, IL (map)

    41.878113 -87.629799

  • SkepticSlam! New bat name, new bat place, new bat time...most of which are still to be announced (tba is anagram of bat, btw)!

Hi all! We've got a lot of interest in this event, and so much of that interest has grown over the past 2 years that we're not sure who is on the Yes RSVP list is still a part of Chicago skeptics. So, we're closing out the original meetup listing and replacing it with a new one for "Skeptics Origins: Chicago". This will be an event to allow folks who so desire to share their story into skepticism.

This also means that the original SkepticSlam! event is going to go away, and you will need to re-RSVP. Trying to force a time and place for the original meetup didn't work out so well, so we're going to take our time and work towards September or even October.

We'll leave this post up for the next couple of days so everyone has a chance to see the change, after which we'll re-post its new incarnation :)

Ok, folks... I haven't confirmed this with Jennifer, but I think we may need changing the date on this (yes, again, I know) since I don't think we can use the room at Jennifer's place if they're out of town and we still don't have confirmation on a location elsewhere.

Good skeptics of Chicago! What say you to taking this into September?

(also, discussion of making this into a Pecha Kucha format, consisting of presentations of 20 slides on auto-advance for 20 seconds each, has apparently only been brought up on Facebook. A rather tautological example of this style of presentation is here: http://youtu.be/jJ2yepIaAtE Yea/nay?)

This sounds like oodles of fun.

Hey folks...this is a potentially very-populated meetup, which I've shifted to my place and/or my building's bland meeting space. Given the interest, I think it's pretty likely that it's going to be a fun event. I also think that between now and two weeks from now we might be able to find a more spacious venue. Can you find a better place in the next few days, should everyone gather at my condo, or should we bump another month?? Up to you!

I mentioned this to a friend of mine in Pilsen and if you want I could try to get him to let us use a theater/gallery space there.

Well...if that's possible, that'd be great. With the new date of August 17. Most folks who come to the meetups are fairly flexible in their location needs, and we've had some nice time sin Pilsen!

(bad sentence parsing...was supposed to be 'nice times in Pilsen') :)

Heeeeeeey, can we make this happen on another day, since we've got a friggin' awesome Black Rock meetup happening on the 15th? (Since it's technically the 3rd Saturday... didn't realize what date you'd set for this!)

I am not too comfortable sitting in strangers' houses or apartments for the most part. (Introvert) I run a film festival and can look into getting a venue, if you want.

If you want we could hold it at my PT clinic. As long as its after 4 on a weekday. N. Clybourn near Relax the Back. Not many chairs, it's comfy and there is enough space to chat. Parking would be on the street (have to pay). It can't be a Monday, Thursdays are best. It would be free. Near the red (N and Clybourn) and brown (Armitage) lines.

Ok, I'm so totally in favor of this idea. Even if we start out with just sharing stories, and the first group(s) can set the rules. If we can tell a good story, we're so much more effective than WHARGARBL READ THESE ELEVENTEEN LINKS. So far, it sounds like we're all evening/weekend folks. Our regular monthly activities are kinda end-loaded for the weekends at the moment, so at the moment our options are to:
    A) further fill our early-in-the-month weekends with skepticism, or
    B) throw another nice Salon-esque after-work option into the mix.

    Also, would we prefer:
    1) an event hosted in some generous person's lovely home, or
    2) an event at a bar/restaurant/coffeeshop/rented warehouse.
Option 1 requires someone to open up their house to what may be some rather raucous storytelling, possibly on a school night which may require booting us all out for bedtime. Option 2 requires someone to hunt down a cheap-or-free venue every time we'd like to hold this event.

    WHAT SAY YOU?

Definitely interested with a sketchy enough past for good stories. Time and date dependent. Prefer week night.

Pretty open to time and date, but something too far from RP will need consideration....
