Just an FYI: I hiked at Starved Rock yesterday, and the trails are very, very icy. If you don't have YakTrax or other traction device for your boots, negotiating the trails will be very difficult.

Thanks for the update! See you guys next hike..:)

Linda, I have to thank you for letting us know of how icy the trails were at Starved Rock. We came ready with Yak Traks etc. It made the hike much safer for all of those who showed up. :)

What an awsome time and great experience visiting SR in the winter beautiful things to see and great fun lively people that made it that much more fun and thanks to the guy that mentioned getting no slip ice cleats, they helped so much.

    • Claudette

Yes, it would have been a slippier/slidier hike if not for the tip from Linda C.

      March 3, 2014

  • Darrel

Great group of 15 enjoyed the icy trails and frozen waterfalls. Nice lunch at the Lodge before heading home.

I live downtown and have an SUV. I am picking up a friend in lakeview so can I can pickup those around the downtown/lakeview area. I am 90% going, but will need to confirm based on my workload. Those interested please check-in with me 1-2 days before the hike, I should have my schedule nailed down by then.

    1 · February 17, 2014

    • Trina

I should have space. Email me directly at [masked] so we can coordinate.

I have two spots available in my car if anyone is interested.

      February 27, 2014

Due to icy conditions, won't make it. Enjoy & stay safe!

The cold of winter is actually one of the best times to visit starved rock. The waterfalls transform into amazing giant ice formations and the bald eagles congregate along the river.

Menards have strap on boot spikes on clearance. "No-Slip Ice Cleats EXTREME" regularly 16.99, now 9.99. http://www.menards.com/main/housewares/apparel/footwear-accessories/no-slip-ice-cleats-extreme/p-1872871-c-7092.htm

I bought "Wintertrax" at Menards, one size fits all- women's 6 to men's 12-it was $9.99

      February 26, 2014

    • Deb S.

There were only 2 pairs left of the extreme.. Now only one... Since I bought mine - Menards in Tinley...

I can drive but I'm in Oak park. If anyone wants to take the green line out to the Austin stop you are free to join me.

    February 17, 2014

    • Boris G.

Hi Nicole, I may have a ride from downtown, but if this does not work out I could come to Austin, green line. Are you still planning to go?

Would love to! I will be driving, and could take 2, maybe 3 people, but can't commit yet because my work gets nuts sometimes. However, ask me a day or two before, if you haven't found a ride.

I'm going to have to back out, not too sure about the ice situation and cold. Look forward to the next one.

I read a comment regarding icy terrain, what's the consensus on footwear?

    February 24, 2014

    • John

      Thanks

      February 24, 2014

    • Linda C

I've used all three: YakTrax Pro($30), Kahtoola MicroSpikes ($60), and IceTrekkers chains ($20). Any of them would work fine. IceTrekkers or Microspikes were my favorites, but you'd probably have to go to an outdoor store to find them. YakTrax should be available at any running store. Get the "Pro" version with the velcro strap, or else they can fall off your feet.

Hi Sandi, Unfortunately, I won't be able to go now. Also, it looks like the terrain is very icy. Sorry.

I would love to come, but I sold my car after moving to Chicago, so I would need a ride from Hyde Park or Downtown, if somebody has space. Will be happy to split the gas expenses.

    February 24, 2014

  • Gail

Hi John, thanks. I'm not sure what I want to do now. I don't really want to do it if it's icy. I'm new to hiking in the winter.

    February 23, 2014

  • Gail

I'd like to go but would also need a ride from the Villa Park/Elmhurst area. Could drive to meet you someplace. Happy to share gas costs. Thx!

Does anyone have an idea about when we would be back? Family plans for dinner but I would love to go.

I can take passengers, however, I believe most of you are from the Chicago area. I am from the far west, approx. 60 miles west of Chicago. I have 4 seats open and will be taking US30W to I39S if that route works for anyone.

This sounds great! Anyone else leaving from the city (I'm in Lakeview)? I'd be happy to chip in for gas - or share a Zipcar with other carless folks.
