April Topic:  Maximize the Effectiveness of Your Product Development Efforts by Analyzing the Skill Sets of your Product Managers

Product Managers usually are required to wear many different hats to successfully bring new products to market. Have you looked at whether their background, skills, etc. prepare them well for all the different roles they must fill? Join us for a discussion of how the product manager position is defined at different companies, which definitions and organizational  structures support innovation and product success, and which can lead to gaps in leadership during the product development process.  Come share your experiences and also gain insights from others.

Need to jumpstart your thought process on this subject? Check out the following paper on the subject: Expertise in Product Management, by Steve Johnson.

---------------------------------------------------------------

The Breakfast Club, meets the first Friday of every month, is an informal gathering of people interested in talking/learning about product development and networking with other product development professionals. You do not need to be a registered member of the PDMA to join us and there is no cost. Just RSVP and show up to join the conversation. Stop by anytime.

8:30-9:00am: Discussion of the monthly topic

9:00-9:00am: Networking and annoucements

It was good to see everyone this morning! Sorry, I had to leave early for my conference calls - it sounded like the start of a great discussion!

See you all in the morning. Unfortunately, I'll have to leave early.

The good news is I have an interview scheduled for Friday morning. The bad news is that I can't be in two places at once, so ironically I am going to have to miss this topic this month.

Disappointed to be missing the April meeting as the topic will definitely generate some great conversation and learning.

Topic Suggestion: Review of the PDMA's new Product Innovation Management Standard. It will be the lead article in Visions magazine (coming out in 2-3 weeks). We could discuss what it is, what it does, how it works, and where it may be off track.

Topic Suggestion: The spectrum of responsibilities that are lumped into the role "Product Manager".

As seen in such article at this: (http://u10c.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/ebook-expertise-in-prodmgmt.pdf) if you aspire to be a professional product manager, when you ask 5 companies what that means you'll likely get at least 6 answers.

From marketing managers, to business analysts.... what do the different flavors and expectations of "Product Management" mean to members of the PDMA community?

Topic Suggestion: Book review/summary/discussion of "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries. Good for initiating or scaling innovative value propositions be they products or services.

Anyone have ideas for topics for April, May and beyond? Dave and I would love to hear your suggestions. Post your ideas here and feel free to comment on any others.
