R and Hadoop: Crunching Big Data

Ever wondered how people run R on bazillions of machines to crunch gazillions of gigabytes? Well, they often use Hadoop.

The August meetup for the Chicago R Users Group will be a joint meet-up with the Chicago Hadoop Users Group . Guest speaker Jeffrey Breen will tell us about "Running R on Hadoop".

When: Wednesday, August 15, 5:15pm

Where: Boeing Building at 425 W. Randolph, in the Nokia offices

Jeffrey's presentation will offer real world examples to get started with R on Hadoop including the best practices, libraries and general how-to. Example code will be available after the presentation to give everyone a jump start.

Jeffrey is president and co-founder of Atmosphere Research Group, a technology and market research firm focused on the travel industry. He has held leadership positions at Forrester Research and the Yankee Group. He’s done some cool Twitter mining, too.

RSVP now so we can put you on the attendees list!

PLEASE NOTE: Since we are meeting at the Nokia offices in the Boeing Building, we are required to present them a list of attendees, including full names. If you have only your first name or a nick name on your meet-up profile, you will be unable to get through security. Please check that your profile also includes your full name.

We will be closing the meet-up invite list at 5pm on August 14. Doors will open around 4:45 PM on the 15th, and the presentation will begin around 5:15 (give or take).

Food and drink will be provided.

Great! It took a little while to get through the intro material but afterward was nice. I think the pace was OK given some people next to me didn't know R at all.

Definitely learned some new things about using R and Hadoop. Plus, I enjoyed the talk, the company, and I appreciate Nokia for sharing the space!

The presentation was well suited for a non-expert with a detailed example and ample time for Q&A.

Good presentation. Would have been excellent if speaker had clarified the threshold for when one should use Hadoop rather than foreach or snow or some other parallelization package.

I thought it was great (and humbling) to see how many people are using R and Hadoop, as I am new to R and have 0 Hadoop experience. I would have liked to learn more about either though, and didn't really pick up any "beginner" tips or even get to see how others were using these technologies in the real world.

Perhaps next time, I'll spend some time talking to others and see what knowledge I can vulture.

(Originally, I had this rated a 3, but the pizza and beer brought it up to a 4-star event. Thanks!!)
