Welcome to another edition of ChicagoRuby Downtown! This month we are doing something a little different: Lightning Talks! Check out the list of speakers below! And if you have an idea for a talk, reach out to the organizers and we will add you to the list.

"Modular monolith: building a Rails app as a tree of engines" by Lionel Barrow

Rails engines are commonly used to extract isolated components from an application, and it's not unheard of for people to build applications entirely out of engines. At Tegus, we're taking this one step further by building our application entirely out of engines that depend on each other via Bundler. By expressing our application as a dependency tree, we're able to write clean, modular code, make testing dramatically faster and more easily scale our codebase. In this talk I'll go over the basic idea and show some of the support code we use to make it work.

"Compacting the uncompatible" by Jack Thorne

Ruby is introducing some methods of compaction in 2.7 but I will look at those methods and also some alternative methods of adding Garbage Collection Compaction to ruby.

"Fee Fi Fo Ferrum" by Hector Rios

Ferrum is a gem that allows you to control Google Chrome via code. This presentation will introduce you to an alternative to Selenium, where the gem is today, and where it will be going. Learn how to interface with Google Chrome, without having to worry about Chromedriver versions.
