A Message from Your Organizer Rob Chicago-Suburban Backpackers

Greetings Backpackers!

It’s hard to believe but the Chicago Suburban Backpackers are starting their 6th season already. We have already had many great seasons and are looking forward to another.

Change is a part of life and there have been changes to the group in the past year. First off I took over the lead organizer position from Anna last fall when Anna and her husband Collin relocated to the Washington DC area. Anna is still an assistant organizer and hopes to organize trips on the East Coast for us. We thank Anna for her service as lead organizer and wish her and Collin the best of luck in their new life out East.

A little bit about me, I am a Wisconsin native and got my start in the outdoors in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the U.P. I have been organizing trips for this group since 2011 and have been part of the Meetup backpacking community since 2009. I am excited to be part of this strong tradition and look forward to working with the organizer staff to keep this group moving forward.

Second off, we have deiced to change the group’s name to the “Chicagoland Backpackers.” The simple reason for this is we think this sounds better and better represents who we are. Make no mistake though, we are the same people and the same group as we have been.

I would also like to announce Ken Klemm as our newest assistant organizer. Ken recently retired from the Oak Park Fire Department and has 30 years experience backpacking around the country. We look forward to Ken’s experience and leadership on the trail.

Finally, many of you on this mailing list have never been to any of our events. Don’t be shy! We now do socializers every month alternating between Oakbrook and Forest Park. Come on out and meet us! Even if you have never been backpacking before we will be happy tell you how you can get started.

See ya on the trail!
