Berkhamsted Castle and a Buddist Monastery - Walk 1 Sun 30 Mar

  • Mar 30, 2014 · 10:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Walk length 10 miles/16km approx. Circular.

A delightful walk from the Chiltern town of Berkhamsted with its medieval castle to the edge of Ashridge Park.

Walk Description

This walk starts with a visit to the ruins of Berkhamsted Castle before taking a northern route uphill through woods to Great Gaddesden. We return back close to the edge of Ashridge Park.

In 1066 William the Conqueror accepted the surrender of the Saxon nobles at Berkhamsted. His half brother, Robert of Mortain, built a castle in this strategically important position through the Chilterns, as a way of protecting London from possible attack. The castle was last occupied in 1496.

An interesting feature on this walk is a Buddist monastery (Amaravati) near St. Margaret's, inspired by Thai forest tradition and the teachings of Ajahn Chan which we can visit.

Lunch and Finish

Please bring a packed lunch and water for the walk. The walk should finish at about 4.15pm and include a 30 min lunch stop and pub(probably at the end), however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).

Meeting and Transport

Meet at 10:45am at Berkhamsted Railway Station for walk to start at 11.00am.

Car: Street parking near the station and close to the castle (please leave enough time to park and check parking restrictions).

Train: The 10:24am train from London Euston gets to Berkhamsted for 10.51am. See: London Midland

I would encourage you to seek other members who are driving, or take advantage of a group save on the train. See: Group Save Advice

Please make a note of the organizers numbers - Leon[masked] and Colin 07709305681.

RSVP: The organizers monitor non-attendance; we will ban anyone who 'no shows' twice for our events. You are also asked to please update your RSVP at least 24 hours beforehand. Please see our RSVP policy

Weather: Updates will be posted; see also BBC Weather
Please see our weather policy

Thanks again Leon and Izzy for a great walk. Nice to see the sun and enjoy the beautiful country we live in again.
Have to disagree with Charlotte below though - prancing pony != excitement. Although will be remembered as I will a cattle prod in defence next time!

Beautiful Walk, lovely weather and great company en route too. Topped with the peace and tranquillity of the Monastery, and mixed with the excitement of a prancing pony = a great day out in the Chilterns. Thank you Izzy, Colin & Leon for organising the walks today.

I did. They were both quite different but equally fascinating. Lots of early mornings and plenty to do... Hence I am still playing catch up!!

Sorry, I won't be able to make it tomorrow. I have an annoying cold that needs shaking before I contemplate a ten mile hike. Hope the weather stays as glorious as today's.

Sorry, I was really looking forward to this walk but I am going to have to cancel as I am still currently stuck in report writing and book marking hell! I had hoped to have finished my reports today but I still have quite a few to do and the deadline is Monday. Looks to be such a lovely day as well. Hope to catch you on a walk soon.

Anyone else coming from Euston? Tony says he + 1 are, and me and if we find a 4th we can do the Groupsave ticket. Where shall we meet, Tony?

Hi, is anyone else getting the suggested 10:24 from Euston. I will be there +1, so could do with 2 others to benefit from the Groupsave 4. Need to arrange a meeting place and time!
