  • Walk length 10 miles/16 km approx. Circular.

A panoramic walk with views from the summit of Ivinghoe Beacon and exploring trails around nearby countryside and woodland.

    Walk Description

Ivinghoe Beacon a is a prominent hill and landmark in the Chiltern Hills, standing 233 m (757 ft) above sea level. It is situated close to the villages of Ivinghoe, and Aldbury in Bucks, the Ashridge Estate, and the village of Little Gaddesden in Hertfordshire and is managed and owned by the National Trust.

Ivinghoe Beacon lies between the towns of Dunstable, Berkhamsted and Tring. It is the starting point of the Icknield Way to the east, and the Ridgeway to the west.

Ivinghoe Beacon has views of the surrounding villages from along the ridge. One point of particular interest is the Whipsnade White Lion made in 1933 on the slope just below the Whipsnade wildlife park.

We will stop off at the Bridgewater Monument and visitor center and also for a drink at the 'Valiant Trooper' pub very near the end of the walk (only a mile away from Tring station) in the picturesque little village of Aldbury.

    Lunch and Finish

Please bring a snack lunch and water for the walk. The walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a 30 min snack lunch stop and pub at the end, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).

Meeting: We are meeting at Tring station from 10.15am for the walk to start at 10.40am (just after the train from London). Meet in the main station car park.

By car: The car park at Tring Station is £3.90 on a Sunday. Other road parking around close to the station is limited and may be free (check for parking restrictions).

By train from London: The train from London Euston at 10.01am gets to Tring for 10.36am. Please see National Rail Enquiries for more information on this (times correct at time of publish, please check before travel). If coming by train I suggest you meet at 9.30am close to the Accessorize shop opposite the tickets kiosks to give you time to get tickets/group saves (see photo below/mobile app may strip out photo).

Cost: £4 Walk cost/meetup payable on the day. Train: £15.90 return approx but group save of 3-9 should give a discount of a third.

The organizers will not be taking the train but will meet the group at Tring station.

Please make a note of  the organizers numbers - Colin[masked] and Leon 07950125826.

RSVP: The organizers monitor non-attendance; please update your RSVP beforehand. Please see our RSVP policy

Before going on any of these walks you need to be reasonably fit and be prepared to be responsible for your own safety.
