  • Agile Estimation Workshop with Kay Johnson

    Christchurch City Council Civic Offices

Estimating is tough. It's not something humans do well. You only have to look back at the 2016 US elections to see how estimating can go so wrong. It's the same in the Agile world or should we say, especially in the Agile world. Kay Johnson is a principal consultant at Assurity but for many in the Christchurch Agile community she needs no introduction. If you are an Agile coach or an aspiring Agile coach/scrum master, chances are you have either been taught by Kay or by someone who has been influenced by Kay. In this workshop you will learn and practice estimation. Expect to be hands-on in a safe workshop environment. We kick off at 5:30 at the Christchurch City Council function room so once the yoga people finish up, we can get acquainted and catch up with others in the community. As with the previous time at the Council offices, please use the Worcester Boulevard entrance instead of the Hereford Street entrance.

  • Business Agility

    Christchurch City Council Civic Offices

According to Evan Leybourn, Business Agility is the way in which organizations are able to remain adaptable and Agile in an ambiguous and changing market. It applies to “every company in every industry in the world”. Agile has finally jumped the fence from being seen as an IT delivery mechanism to becoming an operating model for businesses to address digital disruption. There are many companies in New Zealand incorporating Agile into their DNA. This move has caused a re-think as to what agility means in a business context. How are companies keeping their customers and their people at the heart of what they do while competing in markets that are becoming tighter and more competitive on a daily basis? In this talk, Cain Duell (Double-O Consultants) and Phil Burton (Agile Coach at Spark) will address different aspects of business agility and some of the ways Spark and other companies are addressing these aspects. About Phil Burton: Phil Burton has an extensive background ranging from managing teams in retail stores to building capability through learning and development programmes. Last year Phil was able to consolidate his background with his empathetic yet results-focused approach to become one of Sparks front runner Agile Coaches helping lead the largest all of business Agile Transformations in New Zealand. Phil's out of work exploits includes being a great dad and tennis legend as well as achieving zen-like state with his Francis Barnett motorcycle. Phil will share some of his experiences and what works and doesn't by providing real-world examples. About Cain Duell: Agile and Lean specialist Cain has been practicing the fine art of positive change for over a decade. His insights, capabilities and people-person qualities make him an effective trainer, leader, and support for individuals, teams, and organizations facing challenges. An excellent raconteur and average fly-fisherman, Cain’s enthusiasm extend to almost everything. As an innate philosopher, he admits a certain irony in loving a job where everyone’s happier when he leaves than when he arrives. He quotes philosophers in his Agile-related assertions: "If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading” (Lao Tzu); and, “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” (Yoda). Recently Cain has been applying his trade in all of the business transformations both large and small. Location is Christchurch City Council Building. After hours entrance is the Worcester boulevard entrance opposite the art gallery.

  • Kanban - Get things done

    518 Colombo St

Do you, your team or even your organisation wish to explore and pursue an alternative path to agility? Those who feel overburdened and wish to find some respite to enable them to “get things done” with quality, improved speed, and predictability will find Kanban of interest. With only 3 principals, Kanban is a very powerful tool that enables agility, without the cultural and organisational demands of Scrum. Having recently attended the Kanban Professional Masterclass with David Anderson (the originator of the Kanban Method), Damian will give a basic introduction to Kanban and a variety of different Kanban board designs and styles that may be of interested to those who are getting started, together with those who are already using it. Damian is currently working with a number of organisations using Kanban in their daily operations, together with teams within the technology sector delivering and supporting products and environments.
