What we're about

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for checking out Church of the Cosmos!

We are a group of individuals dedicated to understanding the true story of who we are, where we came from, and what it means to be a human in the cosmos. The story of the cosmos is the story of us. It's your story, and you have a right to know it.

This is a Meetup Group for people that want to:

A) learn more about the cosmos and its creations

B) give back to their communities in a meaningful, secular way

C) gather together to show appreciation and gratitude for the many gifts that we receive from the Cosmos

D) express their appreciation for the universe and for life without subscribing to any god mythologies

This story is just beginning. I need you to help me write it.

Please do not hesitate to message me directly if you have any questions/comments about the group. I'm always looking for ways to improve our meetups.

Regards,

Reece

The Dark Side of the Universe - Lectures 3 & 4: Screening + Discussion

Greetings Fellow Cosmonauts! Please join us this Wednesday (6/26) as we continue our 12-week screening + discussion of the lecture series "Dark Matter, Dark Energy: The Dark Side of the Universe." In this series we will examine the key concepts of an expanding universe from Albert Einstein to Edwin Hubble, led by an expert in the field. We'll be continuing our journey tomorrow night with two lectures about the curvature of space time and how we use Einstein's general theory of relativity to find the hidden secrets of our universe's past, present, and future . A description of lectures #3 & #4 are below: Lecture #3: Space, Time, and Gravity (2007, 30 min) "Einstein taught us that space and time can be combined into spacetime, which has the ability to evolve and grow. Indeed, what we think of as gravity is just a manifestation of the curvature of spacetime. To find things in the universe—including dark matter and dark energy—all we have to do is to map out this curvature." Lecture #4: Cosmology in Einstein's Universe (2007, 29 min) "The expansion of the universe is governed by its spatial curvature and energy density, both of which have specific ways of changing as the universe grows. These features are related to each other by Einstein's general theory of relativity, which can be used to model the past and possible future of the universe." Don't worry if you don't know anything about this subject. No prior understanding of Dark Matter, Dark Energy, subatomic physics, Higgs Bosons, quantum field theory, relativity, or mathematics is required to appreciate this series and to participate in the discussion period. This is a safe-space for science and for humans who want to talk about science freely. Now for some administrative details.... The space will be open for beverages and general schmoozing as early as 7:45PM. The viewing will start promptly at 8:25PM. As usual, BYOB. +1's welcome (& encouraged!). Oh, and this is a pet friendly space. My dog is kind of an asshole, so I keep her at home, but if your pet is chill, feel free to bring 'em along! There is a suggested donation of $2 which helps pay for the venue at Industry Lab. You can donate through the following methods: Venmo: @reece-daniel Paypal: https://www.paypal.me/reecedaniel cash: donation cup at event You can also donate through meetup.com, but they take a 17% cut!!
