Jon Entine: Anatomy of a Smear - Biotechnology Scientists Under Attack for GMO Research
The scientific consensus confirms that foods containing ingredients grown with genetically modified seeds are just as safe (or safer) than other conventional or organic foods. However critics of GMOs have only intensified their attacks on agricultural biotechnology scientists, claiming they are witting tools of the agro-food industry. The most vicious attacks have been leveled at University of Florida horticultural department head Kevin Folta, one of the most respected and independent scientists in the field, who has been accused of being a paid agent for Monsanto. I will review the ongoing saga, including the abuse of the Freedom of Information Act to harass public scientists.
Jon Entine is founder of the Genetic Literacy Project (geneticliteracyproject.org) and the Epigenetics Literacy Project (epigeneticsliteracyproject.org), two online NGOs that cover the intersection of science, media and policy. He is a senior fellow at the Institute for Food and Agricultural Literacy at the University of California-Davis. He recently spoke before the National Academy of Sciences and the Australian National Press Club on GMO safety. Jon is a 40-year journalism veteran, writing for hundreds of media outlets around the world. He was a producer and executive for 20 years at NBC News and ABC News, winning 20 journalism awards, including a National Press Club Consumer Journalism Award and Emmys for specials on the reform movements in China and the former Soviet Union. He was head of documentaries and Tom Brokaw’s long-time producer at NBC News. He received his degree in philosophy from Trinity College (CT) and studied at the University of Michigan under a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.
