Drama Romance

Synopsis

The film follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

While they do feature live music on Saturdays, Becca, the manager, has promised a quiet table away from the performers.  After dinner, we may decide on a nightcap and some smooth jazz in the lounge. – BJ

Since this group focuses on fine dining as a secondary interest, here’s a review from The Scene:

Get Ready Valley View and Independence

by Jason Beudert, November 8

Valley View and Independence both have an incredibly diverse restaurant scene. It is one of the few areas in Northeast Ohio that offers a successful combination of both chains and independents. Once in a while a chain falters, as in the case of Hoggy’s. But as a ’cue junkie, I am excited to announce the new concept filling in for the former BBQ hub.

The Oak Barrel is coming to Independence. This is not your ordinary start-up. Quite the contrary; it has some serious powerhouse operators behind it. From the minds of Fady Chamoun (Aladdin’s Eatery, Taza) and chef Demetrios Atheneos (former executive chef at Deagans in Lakewood), this concept seems to personify the newest wave of whiskey and microbrew gastropub concepts.

Working on this project for over a year, Atheneos and Chamoun aim to “show Cleveland what a modern-day American brasserie tap house is all about.” Promising a comfortable yet refined atmosphere, The Oak Barrel will offer a menu aimed at filling “the void in the area of high-quality steaks, tacos, flatbread stone oven pizza and great BBQ,” according to Atheneos. He is also focusing on a farm-to-table approach with his award-winning sous chefs and pastry chefs.

And don’t worry, they’re not forgetting about the libations. TOB’s bar menu will feature over 100 whiskeys and cocktails inspired by the Prohibition era.

If the success of these owner/operators is indicative of the future of The Oak Barrel, it will be another welcome addition to these aspiring foodie cities. Check out opening updates at www.theoakbarrel.com

They do normally sell-out on Saturday nights, so your firm commitment – your RSVP – is important.  Please don’t cancel with less than a 24-hour notice to the organizer – thanks.
