What we're about

Circlesinging is a spontaneous, improvisational community-singing experience. We draw on traditions of chant, jazz, improvisation, meditation, and mindfulness to create one-of-a-kind choral improvisations. It is very accessible to beginning singers, but can also challenge and inspire the very experienced!

The fundamental building blocks of rhythm, melody, and harmony are used in repeated patterns, creating music unique to the moment. Circles reflect the people in them -- folk, jazz, Rwandan, bluegrass, Diné, gospel, Colombian, pop, rock, hip-hop, classical, funk, new-age, Québécois, beat-boxing -- bring what is in you, and it becomes part of the circle.

A few great videos to give you a sense of what might happen:

November 10 Circlesongs in Yarmouth

317 Main Community Music Center

For those of you new to the form, here's a CircleSing recap: You will be led musically by a leader who will guide you in a safe and welcoming space. The leader gives parts to sections within the larger group, where you will be supported by your fellow singers. Then, for those who wish to take a leap and solo in song, poetry, or dance, while the singers support you, the floor is yours!! The leader will also guide the group in a variety of vocal games and play. This session will be led by Kathy Slack, one of the voice teachers at 317 Main Community Music Center. It's a heart opening and heart warming experience!!! 💜 Snacks and Water will be available. Wear comfortable clothing and socks. There's plenty of parking at 317 Main! There are a few steps to get into the building, and a ramp as well. There are all-gender bathrooms inside. Donations of any amount are accepted.
