Hekate’s Deipnon

Most Pagan traditions only consider the goddess Hekate as the patroness of witches and the Crone aspect of the Triple Goddess image. But to the Hellenist of Ancient Greece and today’s Hellenic Reconstructionist, the goddess Hekate is a completely different figure. Come discover the Hekate of the Ancient Greeks on her most sacred of day, Hekate’s Deipnon.

Hekate's Deipnon (“Hekate’s Dinner”) is the first day in a three day household celebration that is held each lunar month. The Deipnon is held on the last day of a Lunar month. It is followed by Noumenia (“New Moon”) which marks the first day of the next Lunar month and finally by the Agathos Daimon (“Good Spirits”) on the second day of the new Lunar month.

The deipnon is an offering left at a crossroads on the dark moon for Hekate and the spirits of the dead in Her company. Common foods include cake or bread, garlic, fish, eggs and cheese. This is also a time when purifications of miasma (“pollution”) are performed in Hekate’s name. Miasma is both physical and non-physical and needs to be cleared from the home, body and mind.
