What we're about
The Media reports news stories that create a narrative. The purpose of this Meetup group is to fight Fake News narratives. We do that by fighting on two fronts. One that is focused on investigation and the other that is focused on civic community empowerment. We fight on both fronts here at Citizen's Cafe.
SOLUTION 1 - Investigations
In this group, we investigate news stories presented by the media - whether that be mainstream or alternative media - and determine if any given narrative has the evidence to back up its claims.
Each Meetup serves as a safe public space for people to gather and ask critical questions about the news without judgement and resulting in objective analysis, a revival of investigative journalism, and ultimately answers to help determine if what you are reading in the news is fake or if it is real. Our community comprises a grassroots community effort. Your participation is critical to the success of the community and helping our society get out of the Fake News mess we are in.
Each Meetup will be hosted by Adam. He will help facilitate the community and manage the Meetups. However, it is up to YOU, our precious members of the community to drive the effort. Without your help, our community will have nothing to investigate or talk about :( Please come to the Meetups and bring something to the table. Without you, Fake News will have no enemy and no limit to its negative effects on our world.
The Meetups are intended to be a seed for further social interaction among our members where we create a safe place for folks to ask questions about the news, meet others, discuss the news, and broadcast ourselves live on the Internet to include folks from around the world in our community and our discussions. This structure should help facilitate members of our community to find others who are interested in investigating news narratives of common interest, connect and organize together online using Discord, and conduct investigations over time as they have the curiosity and energy to do so.
A warning for our members: one of the most important things to know about conducting an investigation, especially for investigations discerning what is Fake News and what is not, the most important thing to be aware of is the experience of confronting our own belief systems and questioning whether they are true or not. This group is NOT a safe place for any belief system except for the one that seeks to find the Truth above all else. Please join us in the Meetups and on Discord with an open, compassionate, cooperative, and creative mind.
During the course of our investigations, by focusing on evidence, we distinguish between Fake News narratives which lack evidence from Real News narratives which have evidence to back up their claims. Inevitably, we will come to discover which news narratives have unanswered questions that need to be further investigated to have a true and accurate account of the story. Together, we decide how deep we want to look into any particular lead before we are satisfied with our results.
Doing this important work and spreading awareness of Fake News narratives to our friends and families should all help us, as citizens of an open and free democracy, find the truth without being negatively affected by psychological manipulation that is working against us today.
We will be Live Streaming these sessions, so that we can invite the world to help us investigate and discuss in real-time. For any investigations that our members successfully solve, we'll make sure to organize a special Meetup dedicated to conveying our findings to the world.
Join us to change the narrative of the world! We can do this!!
SOLUTION 2 - Civic Community Empowerment, Critical Thinking, Personal Challenge and Growth
Another vital aspect of our Meetup is our intent to get real social with each other. Why is our society in this state of affairs with Fake News? How did this happen? How can we fix it? How does our first constitutional amendment come into play with respect to Fake News and what is the best approach to a solution? How do we connect with each other and collaborate together to find the truth while operating under differing belief systems? How do we create a culture that discourages lies and deception and instead gives incentive to those that act honestly and genuinely?
We want people to talk with each other on safe grounds to stimulate intellectual challenge, emotional challenge, and personal growth. We want to create a real social network that is designed to encourage and facilitate critical thinking. We offer you a space and provide this community the opportunity to grow and build a new culture of civic investigation that results in tangible civic empowerment that has the potential to bring about the kind of civil bond and grand dream of compassion and civic brotherhood that Martin Luther King Jr. was talking about during the civil rights era.
Together we analyze the state of our collective society's current affairs, we debate various aspects, we look back into history to seek further knowledge, we conduct experiments to verify and solidify our understanding, we investigate the issues that peek our curiosity, and we build a new culture that attempts to raise human consciousness through intentionally designed community action based on shared principles found in the framework of compassion, cooperation, and creation. Consider this the main hub of activity that occurs every two weeks. From these Meetups of ours, we expect our community members to host their own Meetup events through our Citizen's Cafe Meetup group.
Step 1) Connect together to have a real social experience to better our society using our bi-weekly Citizen's Cafe Meetup structure.
Step 2) Get inspired to create initiatives and Meetup events that you and others in our community can gain value from. We can be extremely creative here and think of many different kinds of exciting events that help people be better more empowered citizens!! We can have very specific and focused events on a particular topic or skill. We can also have very broad and large events that bring in a big diverse crowd. We can even begin Meetup events that turn into a series of their own and generate a mini-group of its own that regularly meet. These events can be tailored to focus on a specific issue relevant to a small community or opened up towards issues that impact people across the globe.
Step 3) Think of Citizen's Cafe as your main hub for anything related to your civic and political engagement needs. Want to see a change in society? Never mind the divide that political parties bring. It's time to integrate as a human family.
It's time to get real. #RealSocial
