Democrats and Republicans agree, the gridlock in Congress has frustrated the American people and complicated the critical decisions our country faces. Our representatives in Washington are unable to render solutions for one reason - money. Since the 1970s, corporate business organizations have focused billions of dollars to organize and lobby for legislation that favors their special interests. This money buys access and influence in Washington; it dominates our policies, and corrupts our politics. Polls indicate that 90% of Americans favor removing the corrosive influence of money in elections.

And the situation has worsened. The Supreme Court's "Citizens United vs. the FEC" decision of 2010 gave corporations (even multi-nationals with no allegiance to the United States) the right to pump unlimited money into our country's political campaigns, without having to publicly disclose the source of that money. This ruling equated money with free speech.

Citizens Congress consists of a group of concerned people in SLO County who believe this concept is faulty in that it maximizes the "free speech" of those with phenomenal financial resources and minimizes the "free speech" of the average citizen. We achieved our first goal of hosting a conference to bring people from around the country to discuss the problems and to consider the best ways to work toward solutions. The conference was held in June in Pismo Beach. Among the national figures who came were Lawrence Lessig (professor of both law and ethics at Harvard University) and Trevor Potter (former head of the FEC and guest on The Colbert Report). We are continuing this work with people around the country and in Washington to try and bring about healthy changes in the ways our representatives are elected and govern.

We welcome individuals of all political inclinations - indeed, recognition that corporate money should not be the driving force in our nation's politics is the one issue that brings Tea Partiers and Occupy Wall Street supporters together! Whether you're left, right or center, you can join your neighbors here and help change the course of history.
