Winter hiking and skiing in The Scottish Highlands

  • Winter ascent of Ben Nevis, Climb a gully on the North Face of Lochnagar, Stay overnight in a bothy AND one day skiing at a Scottish Ski Centre! - This trip ticks most winter mountaineering boxes...

    No prior winter mountaineering experience is required and full instruction will be provided on the use of the equipment and the skills required to keep safe in the winter environment

    Rough Itinerary will be as follows (note: order of events may change based on weather conditions at the time):

    • Meet at Inverness Airport on Saturday morning, then drive to the Eastern Cairngorms and hike a short distance for an overnight stay in a bothy and a briefing of what to expect over the coming days

    Sunday:  Local hike to practice/learn winter hiking skills (appropriate and safe use of ice axe and crampons) - Second night in the bothy with a fire and maybe a wee dram of whisky

    Monday:  Ascend Lochnagar! - This could be directly over the plateau, or via one of the many gullys within the corrie of it's famous North Face and hike back to collect belongings from the bothy and return to the transport.  Drive to Aviemore and check-in to hostel accommodation

    Tuesday:  A day of pisted skiing (optional activity, not included in the price)

    Wednesday:  Drive to Fort William and continue to hone ice axe and crampon skills on a short hike in the local area

    Thursday: Ascend Ben Nevis! - The route could be either up the tourist track/zig-zags, or we could be a little more adventurous and head to the North face for a gully and/or ridge hike.  The final night will be spent in an award winning hotel, famed for it's array of over 500 different whiskies and for it's electric atmosphere and live music

    Friday:  Drive to the Lake District whereby you have the option of either being dropped off at Penrith Train Station for a direct train back to London, or you can join our Winter Party in the Lake District (must be booked separately)


    The price for this week packed full everything that is 'winter mountaineering' is just £470

    Included in the price will be:

    - All ground travel from Inverness, throughout the trip, back to London

    - 6-nights accommodation

    - Food while on the mountain

    - Tuition and Guided hikes by an experienced and qualified Mountain Leader

    Excluded from the price:

    - Transport to Inverness (flights currently £40, or bus currently £14)

    - Winter mountaineering equipment hire (c.£50)

    - Ski/snowboard/boot hire and lift passes (c.£60)

    - Ski/Snowboard lessons, if required (c.£40)

    - Food when away from the mountain (e.g. pub dinners)

    Note:  The weather and ground conditions will not be known until closer to the date and full winter conditions, whilst expected at this time of year, cannot be guaranteed.  The trip will go ahead regardless of conditions (The only exception being if the prevailing weather is too dangerous e.g. Thunderstorms)
