Details

Civic Makers Melbourne is a community event, led by Code for Australia.

We are a group of people from many different backgrounds (designers, developers, writers, scientists, government folk) who come together and say, "how might be make this city better"?

At the moment, there are clusters around the following areas:

• Healthy and Resilient Communities
• Environment and Sustainability
• Homelessness and Affordable Housing

But we love new ideas and opportunities to put our skills into action!

Each Civic Makers session is a mix of facilitated activities, group time and downtime where you can chat with others, or stick by the food and work on something you want.

This event is open for everyone who is interested in using their skills (whatever they may be - this is definitely not just for tech people) to achieve social good.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

- If you are working on something awesome and need a hand bringing it to life - this is for you!

- If you're finding your job a bit meaningless and want to put your skills into a project for postive social impact - this is for you!

- If you want to meet interesting people who care about making the world a bit better - this is for you!

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

To check out what happened at the first few MeetUps - head over to the message board for our wrap ups and links to our working files. You can also access the public folder for the group here: bit.ly/Civic-Makers-MEL

You can also join the conversation on the Code for Australia Slack (under the #civic-makers channel): bit.ly/CfA-Slack

You don't need to know anything before you show up on the night, but if you want to do any pre-reading, everything is available to you.

WHAT HAPPENS?

• 5:30pm - 5:45pm | Arrivals, hellos, people hiding by the food
• 5:45pm - 7:15pm | Working together + making plans (featuring food)
• 7:15pm - 7:30pm | Wrapping up + chatting to new friends + tidying up

We try to keep it short and sweet - it is a Wednesday after all!

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

• In order to keep waste to a minimum, please bring your reusable drink bottle (or any other beverage holder of choice).

• We provide delicious catering to keep your mind fuelled and tummy full. We have a habit of over-catering, so please bring a container if you want to take food home with you!

• Anything else that helps you do your best work. Some people bring notebooks and devices, some just show up. Everything is cool. We have pens and paper and whiteboards for doodling / note taking.

ACCESSIBILITY & INCLUSION

Like all Code for Australia events, we are committed to creating safe spaces that everybody feels safe and supported in. We have a Code of Conduct which you can check out here: http://bit.ly/Code-Code

If you have any questions or considerations for us to know about your participation in this event, please email Grace ([masked]) and let us know. We want to make these events as inclusive and welcoming as possible for everyone.

We are so grateful to be holding these events on the lands of the Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin nation. We wish to pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that this beautiful land, which many of us now call home, was never ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
