John Steinbeck's 1945 novel is remarkably realistic and was the basis for the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical PIPE DREAM. He based Cannery Row on Monterey's Ocean View Avenue: in a case of life imitating art, the street was renamed Cannery Row!
