Its December and most of us are reflecting on Christmas. The challenge--how should we incorporate Christmas into the out of doors. The answer, an obvious one--pine trees.
With that in mind, we went looking for a trail that was pine tree oriented. This brought us to the Issaqueena Experimental forest where there not only is a section called, Pine Tree Alley, but a trail called "Pine Tree Alley." Our walk will lead us through older, mature pine trees. Underfoot will be pine needles, the scent of pine in the air, and of course the ever present pine cones.
We have two pieces to add as we turn this hike into a spiritual piece. First, we will incorporate an Advent reading that is often referred to as "The Peaceable Kingdom". At Advent/Christmas this passage often gets overlooked because many Christians are focused on the birth story of Jesus and yet it contains a vision of a different kind of world. And so this journey into the forest is an opportunity to lift up another part of the Christmas story and to allow it to rest in our minds and spirits. Secondly, we will go prepared to decorate a Christmas tree for the birds and squirrels--one that they might appreciate--garlands of popcorn and cranberries, ornaments made from bird seed.
So...consider yourself invited...bring a friend...if you want to help prepare some of the decorations, contact Pastor Bruce.
