Chimney Rock Park Hike and Lunch

Let's check out the last of the fall colors!

Washington Valley Park consists of approximately 719 acres that lie along the First Watchung Ridge in Bridgewater Township between the first and second Watchung Mountains at the geographic center of Somerset County. It consists of Pine and Hemlock forests, open freshwater wetland marshes, impressive rock outcroppings, and a 21-acre reservoir.  The surrounding areas were used by Revolutionary War soldiers during the Middlebrook Encampment of 1777; if you look closely you'll see evidence of the remaining walls.

Optionally, we can stop at the Chimney Rock Hawk Watch. A team has been counting hawks here since 1990 and typically spot from 10 - 20,000 hawks, falcons and eagles in a season. The migration season runs from Sept. through Nov. with the greatest number of birds in the middle of September.

I can't promise a bear sighting again, but you never know!

We'll have lunch at Chimney Rock Inn by Route 22.

Distance, Difficulty and Duration: Approx. six miles, depending on trail conditions. We will loop two trails, maybe a third if time allows. Fairly easy trails but rocky, some rises in elevation, maybe a few scrambles.  Plan on three and a half hours in the park.

Gear:  Hiking boots/shoes with good ankle support strongly recommended.  Water.  Cameras.  Binoculars if you are a bird watcher. Snacks.

Incidentals:  Stormy weather cancels.  I'll send out my cell number the night before.  Cell reception is fine in the park. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

Directions: Car pools are a possibility...please indicate if you are interested in car pooling when you RSVP.  The park is about 25 minutes from downtown Clinton.

Since Newman's Lane is under construction and access to the lot may be limited, we will enter the park at the northwestern end via the Crim Elementary School soccer fields.  Once you are on Crim Road, you will see the elementary school.  Look for the driveway to the soccer fields directly across the street from the school.  We will meet in the lot at 8:45.

See you there!

I was on the waiting list for a volunteer event & a spot just opened up so depending on our timing I may have to skip lunch or leave lunch early - after paying of course! I have to be in Madison by 2pm. Still hope to break bread with everyone!
